About Bhuri Bai

Smt. Bhuri Bai is a traditional Bhil painter, born in Pitol, a small village in Madhya Pradesh. As a child, she accompanied her father in the making of ritualistic Bhil paintings. She became well-versed in the intricacies of the Bhil painting at a young age. After her marriage, she began working as a laborer. She came in contact with J. Swaminathan, and it inspired her to fulfill her dream of becoming a painter. Motivated by him, she became the first Bhil artist to draw the Bhil motifs and elements on paper and carved a special space for herself in the art world. She has exhibited her paintings in various cities of Delhi, as well as in Paris. She has been honored with numerous awards such as Ahalya Samman, Rani Durgavati award, Shikhar Samman, the highest award from the Government of Madhya Pradesh, and Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India.
