This masterful Pattachitra painting by National Award-winning artist Gitanjali Das depicts Lord Buddha in an extraordinary state of deep meditation and cosmic presence. As one of the most revered teachers of ancient India, Buddha is celebrated for his message of peace and the profound importance of controlling the mind to end suffering. In this unique iconographic representation, the Enlightened One is portrayed with ten hands, a rare and powerful imagery that signifies his multifaceted ability to guide all sentient beings toward salvation.
The central hands are held in the Dharmachakra mudra, the gesture of "turning the wheel of Dharma," symbolizing the moment he first preached his teachings and set the universal laws of righteousness in motion. The additional radiating hands are positioned in various sacred gestures, including the Vitarka mudra, representing the transmission of knowledge and intellectual discussion, and the Varda mudra, the gesture of granting blessings. With a gentle, knowing smile and eyes partially closed in a blissful state of Nirvana, the painting captures a Buddha who is both anchored in stillness and dynamically active in his compassion for the world.
The composition is framed within an elaborate architectural sanctuary, characteristic of the Odisha Pattachitra style. A lush, flowering vine scroll fills the upper register, contrasting with the dark, starlit background that emphasizes the radiant halo (prabhamandala) surrounding the deity.
