About the Artwork +
Discover the Pithora Art, a tribal artform practiced by Rathwa, Bhil, and Bhilala tribes, visually embodying prayers for prosperity and health. Each meticulously painted mural, an offering to deities and ancestors, narrates creation myths and cultural beliefs. Centered on Pithora Dev, the god of marriage and prosperity, these vibrant artworks ensure community well-being and continuity. Presenting a Pithora painting by Chanchal Soni showcasing the vibrant and intricate representation of the tribal culture, storytelling, and spiritual symbolism, brought to life through an exquisite interplay of bold colors and geometric patterns. The artwork is dominated by rhythmic dot work, striking line detailing, and an earthy palette of ochre, red, green, yellow, and blue, creating a visually engaging composition. The central figure, called Baba Ganeh, is depicted in traditional tribal attire, embodying the essence of folklore and indigenous heritage. Within Pithora paintings, Baba Ganeh, often depicted holding a traditional hookah, holds a place of reverence among the Rathwa tribe. He is invoked at the start of significant festivals and events, where he is also recognized as Ganpati Dada, distinguished by his elephant trunk. Portrayed as a paternal figure, Baba Ganeh embodies a sense of guidance and protection within the community's spiritual practices. In this beautiful depiction, his attire is adorned with intricate patterns that enhance the richness of the painting, while his relaxed posture exudes a sense of ease and celebration. The horse is stylized with elaborate decorative elements, featuring sharp, jagged bridle and swirling lines on its tail, characteristic of Pithora’s dynamic visual language. The layered detailing on the horse’s body, achieved through meticulous dot work and geometric shapes, adds depth and movement to the piece. The swirling tail and expressive posture of the horse contribute to the narrative energy of the artwork, symbolizing vitality and power. The surrounding border, adorned with repetitive triangular motifs in warm and cool hues, frames the composition beautifully, reinforcing the balance and symmetry inherent in traditional Pithora art. Chanchal Soni's Pithora painting masterfully conveys the profound spirituality and ritualistic traditions of these tribes, fostering a sense of deep unity with the natural world.
