About Chhau Masks

What is a Chhau Mask?

A Chhau mask is a handcrafted papier-mache mask created for the Chhau dance, a UNESCO-recognised Intangible Cultural Heritage performance tradition of eastern India. Unlike facial expressions, Chhau dancers rely entirely on these elaborate, sculptural masks, paired with martial, acrobatic movement, to embody characters from Hindu mythology and tribal folklore. Each handmade Chhau mask is both a performance tool and a striking piece of Chhau wall art, sculpted, painted and embellished entirely by hand.

Made most prominently for Purulia Chhau in West Bengal, these masks give visual form to gods, demons and legendary figures, from a serene, radiant Durga to a fierce, wide-eyed Mahishasura, making each piece a study in exaggerated, expressive craftsmanship.

Key Features of Chhau Masks

Handcrafted using layered papier-mache over a clay mould
GI-tagged and recognised under the One District One Product initiative
Exaggerated, theatrical facial features designed for stage visibility
Finished with natural dyes, feathers, beads, sequins and metallic paint
Rooted in the UNESCO-recognised Chhau dance tradition
Crafted almost exclusively by artisan families in Charida, Purulia

History of Chhau Masks

Origin of Chhau Masks

Chhau mask-making dates back several centuries, rooted in the martial and religious traditions of tribal communities in eastern India. Chhau dance itself began as a martial art form before evolving into a masked storytelling tradition under the influence of local rulers and temple culture, with masks becoming central to how dancers conveyed character and emotion on stage.

Evolution of Chhau Masks

The craft became especially refined in Charida village, Purulia, where generations of artisans known as Sutradhars developed the mask-making tradition into its current, highly expressive form. Over time, Chhau performance itself branched into three distinct regional styles: Purulia Chhau in West Bengal, which relies heavily on masks; Seraikella Chhau in Jharkhand, which uses more minimalist, subtly expressive masks; and Mayurbhanj Chhau in Odisha, which uses no masks at all, relying instead on facial expression and body language.

Contemporary Chhau Masks

Today, Chhau masks are appreciated well beyond the stage, displayed as decorative art in homes, galleries and cultural exhibitions for their vivid colour and sculptural craftsmanship. Artisan families in Charida continue to sustain the tradition, even as the craft faces competition from mass production, with cultural programs, workshops and online platforms helping keep the art form and its livelihoods alive.

Chhau Mask Themes and Motifs

Deities in Chhau Masks

Deities form the core subject matter of Chhau mask-making. Durga is by far the most commonly depicted figure, rendered with a radiant, powerful expression that embodies divine strength, alongside masks of Ganesha, Shiva, Krishna, Saraswati, Hanuman, Kali and Kartikeya, each carrying distinct facial features and colour choices tied to their mythological character.

Mythological Narratives in Chhau Masks

Chhau masks draw heavily on stories from the Ramayana, Mahabharata and Bhagavata Purana. A Mahishasura mask, with its fierce expression and exaggerated features, is used to portray evil in the Durga narrative, while heroic figures like Rama and villains like Ravana bring epic storytelling to life through the dancer's mask and movement.

Tribal and Folk Figures in Chhau Masks

Beyond mythology, Chhau masks also depict tribal community figures, including tribal men, women, and couples, reflecting the folk roots of the Chhau tradition alongside its devotional themes. Kathakali-inspired masks, blending Bengal's Chhau tradition with South Indian performance aesthetics, also appear within the craft.

Colour and Expression Patterns

Colour plays a symbolic role in Chhau mask design: deep blues and greens often signal divine or heroic characters, while reds and darker tones are used for demonic or fierce figures. Wide, exaggerated eyes, sharp jawlines, and expressive mouths are deliberately built into every mask, since these static features must communicate emotion without the dancer's own face being visible.

Materials and Techniques of Chhau Masks / How Chhau Masks Are Made

Clay and Papier-Mache

Every Chhau mask begins with a clay mould, sculpted to the desired facial form. Layers of paper pulp are then applied over the mould using natural adhesives, building up the mask's structure until it dries and hardens into a lightweight, durable shell.

Natural Dyes and Embellishments

Once removed from the mould, the mask is painted using natural dyes and embellished with feathers, beads, sequins and metallic paints, giving each piece its vivid, theatrical finish designed to catch the light during performance.

Bamboo and Natural Fibres

Bamboo and natural fibres are often used to reinforce the mask's structure or add decorative elements such as headdresses and crowns, completing the sculptural silhouette that defines a finished Chhau mask.

Famous Chhau Mask Artists & Master Craftsmen

Every mask in this collection is handcrafted by Dharmendra Sutradhar, a fourth-generation mask artisan from Charida, Purulia, with over two decades of experience in the craft inherited from his forefathers. Discover more craftspeople practising traditional Indian art forms on our Artists page.

How to Identify Authentic Chhau Masks

Layered papier-mache construction: Genuine masks are noticeably lightweight yet sturdy, built from layered paper pulp over a clay mould, rather than moulded plastic or resin.
Hand-painted natural dyes: Look for slight variation in colour intensity and brushwork across the mask's surface, a sign of hand-painting rather than uniform machine printing.
Hand-applied embellishments: Feathers, beads, sequins and metallic paint should feel individually placed, with small natural irregularities, not a printed or moulded pattern.
Regional attribution: Authentic Chhau masks are most reliably sourced from Charida, Purulia, or from platforms that name the specific artisan and provide a certificate of authenticity, as MeMeraki does with every piece.
