About the Artwork +
This striking installation features a Gond painting by Gareeba Tekam. Gond art is a traditional Indian tribal art form practiced by the Gond community of Madhya Pradesh, acting as cultural memory and often depicting local deities, folklore, forests and animals that the community lived alongside. It is deeply connected to nature, with animals, trees, birds, rivers symbolising balance and coexistence. This artform traditionally transforms everyday fauna and flora into mythical, expressive beings. Characteristic of this style, the artwork is defined by its vibrant color fields and a highly detailed, repetitive patterning of fine lines and dots that brings texture and movement to the animal forms.
The defining feature of this artwork is its multi-panel, fragmented layout. The composition is divided across seven separate rectangular and square frames arranged in a precise, interlocking cluster. Together, these frames act as windows to a single, continuous canvas depicting three interconnected lions. The color palette is bold and minimalist, relying on high-contrast background fields of vibrant yellow and deep red to highlight the textured figures of the animals.
Spanning across the two top frames on the left, the lion stares directly forward with wide, expressive white eyes. Its face is a dark grey, detailed with a web of lines. Its muzzle and ears are highlighted in a bright blue. Surrounding its face is a massive, circular white mane. Below it, in a separate small bottom frame, its two patterned front paws firmly meet the ground.
Positioned centrally within two frames, the lion is framed by a red mane, featuring blue ears and a blue snout, like its companions, with distinct front paws anchoring the bottom of its frame. Its torso extends upward into the top-middle frame, merging organically with the backs of the other lions. In two frames on the right side, the figure mirrors the lion on the left with a prominent white mane and an intense gaze. Its front legs and paws extend downwards into a wide, horizontally oriented bottom frame.
The bodies of the lions are not solid blocks of color. Instead, they are entirely filled with meticulous, hand-drawn hatch marks and scale-like textures against charcoal, deep blue, maroon and dark green bases. These lines mimic the contours of muscle and fur. The black frames enclosing each segment provide a hard, geometric contrast to the fluid, organic and highly patterned interior of the composition. The artwork plays with visual illusion and shared forms. While there are three distinct lion faces and three pairs of front legs, their bodies seamlessly merge into a single, collective mass. This evokes a sense of unity, shared strength and community, a common element across Gond artworks.
