In this evocative Kalighat painting, master artist Uttam Chitrakar captures the celestial family of Goddess Durga in a moment of profound cultural and spiritual significance. In the regional traditions of Bengal, the annual Durga Puja is celebrated not just as a victory of good over evil, but as the homecoming of a daughter to her maternal home. In this intimate narrative, as is common in the Eastern region, the goddesses Lakshmi and Saraswati are revered as Durga's daughters, while Ganesha and Kartikeya stand as her devoted sons.
At the heart of this visual chronicle stands Maa Durga, resplendent in her divine glory. Her form is a vibrant celebration of color and detail, with ten arms gracefully wielding an array of weapons that symbolize her supreme strength and unwavering resolve. Mounted upon her majestic lion, the Goddess embodies a regal confidence that is mirrored in the intricate patterns of her garments and jewelry—hallmarks of the refined 19th-century folk style that originated near Kolkata's Kalighat temple.
The Goddess is flanked by her celestial children, completing the divine assembly. To her left, the elephant-headed Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, stands beside Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and abundance, who is accompanied by her vahana, the owl. To the right, the warrior-god Kartikeya is seen with his peacock, alongside Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge and music, identifiable by her swan. Set against a lush, flowering backdrop, Uttam Chitrakar’s bold lines and bright watercolors transform this ancient myth into a living panorama of Bengali culture, inviting viewers to witness a beautiful amalgamation of the Hindu pantheon.

Kalighat painting is a traditional Indian art form that originated in the 19th century near the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata. It is known for its bold lines, vibrant colors, and minimal backgrounds, influencing artists like Jamini Roy. Initially devotional souvenirs for pilgrims, the themes expanded to include social satires, depicting figures like Goddess Kali, Babu & Bibi, and Cat with the Fish. Artists, known as 'patuas,' used natural pigments on paper or cloth, sometimes incorporating European realism for British patrons. Although it declined with the rise of machine prints, recent efforts by artists, government, and connoisseurs are reviving this culturally and historically significant art form through exhibitions and workshops.
