About the Artwork +
This stunning, intricately crafted circular mat in Sabai grass work by Dipali Mura represents a pinnacle of mastery in traditional multi-toned coiled basketry. The entire structure is built through a painstaking rhythm of hand-twisting, bundling and stitching lengths of wild grass to achieve an impeccably flat, structurally sound circular form with absolutely zero warping or uneven transitions.
Sabai grass craft is a traditional livelihood and indigenous art form deeply rooted in the tribal and rural ecosystems of eastern India, particularly within parts of Odisha and West Bengal. Harvested from the wild perennial grass (Eulaliopsis binata), the long, fibrous stalks are naturally dried, manually sorted, combed, and frequently dyed using local organic pigments before being tightly coiled. The craft relies on a continuous coiling technique where a core bundle of grass is wrapped and anchored sequentially to the preceding row using a sturdy sewing needle or awl, traditionally celebrated for its immense durability, eco-friendly footprint, and the seamless inclusion of intricate geometric tribal aesthetics directly into utility objects.
The graphic layout of this piece unfolds in pristine concentric registers, spiraling outward from a highly dynamic central axis. At the absolute core is a bold, eight-pointed starburst pattern rendered in a deep, natural chocolate-brown dyed grass, contrasting sharply against the un-dyed cream base fibers. This central star utilizes alternating diagonal stitches that mimic a swirling, kinetic motion.
Surrounding this central emblem are concentric bands of expanding serrated teeth and alternating diamond chevrons that ripple outward to the margin, showcasing a flawless distribution of tension. The outermost rim is completed with a dense, alternating wrap of dark and light fibers that cleanly seals the structural integrity of the weave.
Ultimately, this circular creation is a brilliant testament to indigenous design intelligence, showcasing how raw forest materials can be elevated into a sophisticated, scannable masterwork of symmetry and rhythmic hand-craftsmanship.
