About Natural Grass Art

The Craft and Heritage of Grass Weaving in India

MeMeraki's natural grass art collection brings together one of India's most sustainable craft traditions: artworks woven entirely from grass, reed and cane by artisans in Bihar, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Jammu & Kashmir. Each piece of handmade grass art begins as raw, sun-dried grass, split, dyed and woven strand by strand into intricate motifs, making it as much a feat of patience as of craftsmanship.

From the golden-hued Sikki grass art of Mithila to Odisha's coiled Sabai grass weaves and Kashmir's willow wicker discs, this collection lets you explore grass wall art in its many regional forms. Whether you're looking to buy grass art online for a nature-inspired interior or searching for a distinctive, eco-conscious piece of grass art home décor, MeMeraki connects you directly with the artisans keeping these fibre-weaving traditions alive.

The Craft and Heritage of Grass Weaving in India

Long before it became wall art, grass weaving served everyday life across rural India: baskets, mats, storage boxes and ceremonial containers, made from whatever fibre grew locally. Communities in the swampy riverbeds of Mithila, Bihar developed Sikki grass craft, prized for its natural golden sheen; artisans in Odisha turned coarse Sabai grass into coiled, durable weaves; and communities in Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal shaped Moonj grass and cane into similarly resilient forms.

What unites these traditions is an intimate relationship with local ecology. Grass is harvested seasonally, dried for weeks to develop its colour, sometimes dyed with natural pigments, and then woven or coiled entirely by hand using techniques passed down through generations of largely women artisans. Over time, these functional crafts have evolved into fine wall art, reinterpreting mythological figures, folk scenes and nature motifs in a material once reserved for baskets and mats. You can read more about these regional traditions in our blog on grass weaving traditions of India.

Explore Traditional Grass Art Forms

Our collection features grass and natural-fibre art across several distinct regional crafts.

Sikki Grass Art

Native to the Mithila region of Bihar, Sikki grass art uses fine, golden strands of Sikki grass, traditionally associated with goddess Sita, to create intricately woven depictions of deities, village life and folk scenes.

Sabai Grass Craft

A tradition from the tribal regions of Odisha, Sabai grass work uses coiling and weaving techniques to build durable, textured pieces, from decorative plates and mandalas to layered wall art sets, valued for their earthy, tactile finish.

Moonj Grass Craft

Practised in Uttar Pradesh, Moonj grass weaving produces finely coiled panels and wall hangings, often combined with Taat and Kasa grass for added texture and pattern.

Bamboo and Cane Craft

Found across Bihar and neighbouring regions, bamboo and cane weaving is used to create geometric box frames and structured wall pieces, offering a more graphic, architectural counterpart to the softer grass weaves.

Willow Wicker Craft

A craft associated with Jammu & Kashmir, willow wicker work is shaped into concentric discs and panels, giving each piece a refined, sculptural quality distinct from the flatter grasswork of the plains.

Together, these crafts let you choose the texture, colour and regional character that best fits your space. Discover more traditional Indian art forms on our artforms page.

Natural Grass Art for Home Décor

Because it's woven rather than painted, natural grass art brings a distinct, organic texture to a wall that few other mediums can match. Its earthy tones and dimensional weave make it a natural fit for nature-inspired, rustic, boho or minimalist home decor, working equally well as a single statement piece or as part of a layered gallery wall. Circular Sikki and Sabai grass pieces, in particular, make elegant, sculptural accents above consoles, staircases and reading nooks.

Sustainable and Statement Wall Art for Every Space

Natural grass art is among the most sustainable wall art you can bring into a home, made entirely from renewable, biodegradable plant fibres rather than paint, canvas or synthetic material. This makes it a fitting choice for eco-conscious interiors, alongside its visual appeal. Because grass art ranges from delicate, golden Sikki weaves to bold, sculptural willow wicker discs, it adapts easily across living rooms, bedrooms, puja rooms, dining spaces and workspaces, adding warmth and texture wherever it's placed.

Handcrafted by Indian Artisans

Natural Grass Art for Gifting

A handwoven grass artwork makes a thoughtful, distinctive gift for weddings, housewarmings, and festive occasions, especially for anyone drawn to sustainable, handcrafted décor over mass-produced pieces. Its texture and earthy palette give it a different character from painted gifts, making it a memorable choice for nature lovers and design-conscious recipients alike. Pair a grass art piece with other pieces from our Gallery Wall Collection or explore our Gifts and Souvenirs collection to build a considered gifting set.

FAQs About Natural Grass Art

1. What is natural grass art?

Natural grass art is wall art and décor handwoven from grasses such as Sikki, Sabai and Moonj, or from bamboo, cane and willow. Artisans dry, dye and weave the fibres by hand to build intricate, textured designs.

2. Which grass art form should I choose for my home?

It depends on the look you want. Sikki grass art suits detailed, golden-toned pieces with figurative or devotional themes; Sabai and Moonj grass work offer a more coiled, earthy texture, while willow wicker discs bring a refined, sculptural look.

3. Is natural grass art durable for everyday display?

Yes, when kept away from direct sunlight and excess moisture, handwoven grass art holds its colour and shape well over time. Light dusting is usually enough to keep it looking fresh.

4. Are these grass artworks handmade?
