This is an interesting plate in Kashmiri Paper Mache by Riyaz Khan, which takes us on a journey through the beautiful and lush valleys of Kashmir.
Kashmiri papier-mâché, or Kar-e-Kalamdani, is a legendary, centuries-old craft introduced from Persia in the 14th century. Artisans create beautiful, colorful household objects like vases, boxes, and trays using waste paper pulp mixed with natural adhesives. The items are meticulously hand-painted with vibrant floral, bird, or calligraphic motifs and finished with a lacquer coating.
This piece is a beautiful rendition with the motifs of a traditional style called Arabesque / Geometric Naqashi arranged in a radiating central mandala framework with floral motifs. The colour scheme is deeply rooted in heritage Kashmiri craftsmanship, using deep forest greens, warm ochres, and muted earthy reds outlined in fine, controlled white and gold lines to create layers and visual contrast. The main design, inspired by Persian carpet designs (Kashan) and Mughal architecture, is an arrangement of floral patterns and chinar leaves in the form of a bouquet in ochre, green, and brown.
The textured cream and ochre background surrounding the central star is executed in the incredibly dense Hazara (Thousand Flowers) style. It consists of thousands of microscopic, swirling golden scroll lines and tiny floral buds (naqashi).
Binding this composition together is the layered border of red with yellow dotted strips encasing a grey strip patterned in creme, reflecting the connection of the artist to his environment.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.

Returns and Replacements
We offer replacements or repairs if your artwork arrives damaged or has a quality issue. As each artwork is handcrafted, we do not accept returns or refunds for orders received in the expected condition.
Delivery Timeline
Ready To Ship/In Stock artworks are shipped in 3-4 days. We only accept return requests for Ready to Ship/In stock artworks placed within a week from date of delivery. However, no returns can be accepted for international deliveries.
