This striking and masterfully executed Gond painting by Manoj Tekam presents an enchanting nature narrative that celebrates the organic harmony of the central Indian wilderness. Characterized by its signature texture-work and clean geometry, the composition reimagines a sacred forest scene through a beautifully balanced tribal lens.
Gond painting is a vibrant tribal art form from Madhya Pradesh, practiced by the Gond community. It is celebrated for its intricate geometric patterns, bold colors and deep connection to nature. Traditionally used to decorate village mud walls, the art has evolved into a globally recognized style.
Rising from the lower center of the pristine white paper is a monumental Tree of Life. Its thick, winding trunk and heavy branches are filled with a vibrant emerald-green pigment, meticulously detailed with hundreds of tight, overlapping braided black ink strokes that mimic thick bark and rushing life force. The canopy expands into five large, rounded cloud-like clusters composed entirely of thousands of fine, hand-drawn grey feathers or pointed leaf motifs packed tightly together.
Symmetrically flanking the base of the roots are two highly stylized golden-ochre deer facing outward but craning their necks back toward the trunk. Their bodies are completely filled with a dense, rhythmic sequence of concentric golden scales, horizontal black stripes, and warm orange highlights on their ears and tails. Their feet transform into delicate, multi-pointed roots that firmly grip the grass-green base mound.
This painting proudly depicts the signature patterns of the artist Manoj Tekam, which are highly symbolic in nature and are inspired by the daily life of the Gond community. These include - Sarson ke daane (mustard seeds), also known as Rai, symbolizes the agricultural importance and the use of mustard seeds in the tribe's food and medicine; Gehu ke baal (wheat spikes) represents the significance of wheat in their farming practices and diet; and Beni (braid), reflects the patterns found in the everyday customs and aesthetics of the Gond community.
This composition depicts the interconnectedness between the forest and its beings, reflecting on the Gond worldview of harmonious co-existence.
