This magnificent and iconographically complex Gond painting by Manoj Tekam captures a dynamic, circular nature narrative, showcasing a sacred stag leaping gracefully before a burning solar eclipse disc that houses a mystical tree canopy.
Gond painting is a vibrant tribal art form from Madhya Pradesh, practiced by the Gond community. It is celebrated for its intricate geometric patterns, bold colors and deep connection to nature. Traditionally used to decorate village mud walls, the art has evolved into a globally recognized style.
The center of the canvas is dominated by a majestic, long-necked deer rendered in a rich golden-orange tone. The entire hide of the leaping golden-orange stag is rendered using a highly uniform application of Gehu ke baal (wheat spikes), where thousands of hand-drawn, teardrop-shaped scales mimic both a radiant coat of fur and the symmetry of ripening grain.
As the neck cranes backward, the stag's massive antlers morph into tree branches filled entirely with Sarson ke daane (mustard seeds), executed as an incredibly dense, cloud-like explosion of thousands of tiny black pointillist ink dots. This massive field of black stippling is beautifully framed by a sharp, radiating outer ring of solar rays, contrasting the micro-textures of the seeds with bold, geometric lines. Interacting playfully around the stag are four stylized forest birds.
This composition depicts the interconnectedness between the forest and its beings, reflecting on the Gond worldview of harmonious co-existence.
