About the Artwork +
This Gond painting by Manoj Tekam is a rhythmic and highly patterned study of a sheep, demonstrating the unique tribal aesthetic of the Gond community from Madhya Pradesh. Gond art is characterized by its transformation of natural and mythical subjects into a complex visual language of dots, dashes, and repetitive motifs, reflecting a worldview where every element of nature is vibrant with spirit.
The composition is dominated by the large, ovoid body of the sheep, which acts as a vast canvas for Tekam’s signature fill-patterns. The entire form is composed of hundreds of individual, scale-like shapes, each meticulously detailed with fine vertical hatching. This repetitive linework creates a powerful tactile quality, simulating the dense, heavy texture of a thick woolen fleece and giving the flat surface a sense of three-dimensional volume. Three sIgnature patterns of the artist are proudly shown in the artwork - Sarson ke daane (mustard seeds), Gehu ke baal (wheat spikes), and Beni (braid).
In a striking contrast to the monochromatic body, the animal's head features a different pattern of overlapping semi-circles or fish-scale motifs rendered in deep black and accented with vibrant orange dots. The yellow eye, a recurring feature in Tekam’s work, serves as a sharp focal point that imbues the creature with an alert and watchful energy. The slender, solid black legs at the base provide a delicate foundation for the massive, patterned body above, highlighting the Gond penchant for playing with scale and symbolic proportion. Through this interplay of precise linework and strategic color accents, the artist transforms a simple animal into a sophisticated emblem of the intricate patterns found in the natural world.
