In this vibrant Pattachitra plate, artist Apindra Swain unveils a mesmerizing symphony of artistry, bringing the spiritual narratives of Vrindavan into a brilliant, circular format. At the very core of this divine mandala is the Radha Krishna Raas Leela, set against a radiant yellow background. Krishna is depicted in his classic tribhanga pose, his mystical blue skin contrasting with the ardent red of Radha’s attire as they stand beneath a lush, green-canopied tree. Their large, expressive "fish-shaped" eyes and the rhythmic flow of their silhouettes embody a sense of divine ecstasy and mutual devotion.
The central composition is enveloped by a series of brilliant panels that depict the Krishna Leela, specifically focusing on the various Asuras (demons) sent by Kansa to kill the young Krishna. These scenes illustrate Krishna's early triumphs over evil in Gokul and Vrindavan. The outer ring features detailed portrayals of these encounters, including the slaying of the giant crane demon Bakasura, the subduing of the venomous serpent Kaliya, and the defeat of the nurse-demon Putana. Each panel is separated by decorative black and white borders, acting as windows into these dramatic folktales of protection and divine power.
The entire saga unfolds amidst swirling vines, floral motifs, and geometric forms that converge to create a sense of infinite abundance. The artist utilizes a masterful application of color theory—vivid greens, oranges, and deep blues—painted meticulously by hand using natural pigments. The use of blues for Krishna's mysticism and reds for Radha's ardor creates a beautiful visual balance that anchors the energetic linework. The outermost rim is finished with a bold red border, transforming the plate into a window of divine stories that evoke awe and reverence for the ancient Odishan heritage.
