About the Artwork +

This spectacular, narrative-dense Kalamkari canvas by artist Harinath N. documents the sacred Puranic legend of the birth and divine transformation of Lord Ganesha. The complex textile painting utilizes a bold juxtaposition of scale, balancing a monumental iconographic portrait on the left against structured chronological panels on the right.

The composition is anchored on the left by a massive figure of Lord Ganesha, rendered in a warm, rich terracotta-orange skin tone to represent his creation from the turmeric and clay paste off the body of Goddess Parvati. This monumental Ganesha faces right in a powerful, seated posture, his large elephant trunk curling elegantly to scoop sweetmeats from a golden vessel. The artist has heavily detailed his form with an extraordinary array of ceremonial ornaments, including thick parallel bands of pearl necklaces, armlets, and a towering, multi-layered golden crown filled with hundreds of microscopic pen-strokes. Tucked dynamically behind his back along the far left edge is an active wildlife grove featuring a vertically stacked herd of elephants painted in solid, alternating fields of pink, yellow, blue, and grey, grounding the scene within a sacred forest ecosystem.

The right half of the textile functions as a chronological scriptural record, split into three distinct horizontal panels that track his birth story. The lowermost panel depicts Goddess Parvati breathing life into her young son to guard her inner chambers, followed by the tense return of Lord Shiva accompanied by his ascetic attendants. The middle panel documents the dramatic cosmic conflict where Shiva's forces confront the unyielding guardian, culminating in the severing of the boy's human head and the subsequent remorse of the divine mother. The two registers above resolve the epic tale, detailing the placement of the sacred elephant head onto the child's body, his coronation as Ganapati (leader of the Ganas), and an assembly of divine figures celebrating his new role as the remover of obstacles.

The depiction includes Shiva, shown in with blue skin, matted locks (jata) adorned with a crescent moon, a tiger skin wrapped around his waist and a snake around his neck, holding a trishula in his hand. Parvati is depicted as a beautiful Goddess, dressed in elegant blue garments. Ganesha is shown in both forms, as a child and as an elephant headed deity. The topmost register also shows Brahma, the four-faced creator deity and Vishnu with his shankha (conch) and chakra (discus), both their lower hands in the abhaya mudra (gesture of protection and fearlessness) and varada mudra (gesture of boon-giving).

The entire complex narrative is neatly framed within a thick, continuous maroon border, delivering a flawless equilibrium between monumental deity portraiture and sequential panel storytelling.

Harinath N

Harinath N
Harinath N. is a highly accomplished artist from the mesmerising town of Srikalahasti, with an artistic journey spanning over 35 years during which he has mastered the intricacies of an ancient art form. His exceptional talent has been recognised by numerous awards and recognitions, including the National Kalidas Academy Award. He is renowned for his unique depiction of scenes from Indian epics and the Tree of Life stories.

Kalamkari

Kalamkari is an ancient Indian art form of painting or printing on fabric using natural dyes and intricate penwork, with its name literally meaning 'craftwork done with a pen'. Flourishing under the Mughals and later the Golconda and Coromandel Sultanates, its prominent centers are Srikalahasti and Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh. This art form traditionally depicts Hindu mythological epics like Mahabharata and Ramayana, featuring deities and common occurrences, characterized by rounded faces, large eyes, and detailed costumes. Legend connects its origin to Radha teaching the art in Machilipatnam and its use on Hanuman's flag. The meticulous technique involves preparing cotton or silk fabric, outlining designs with a 'kalam' (bamboo or palm stick dipped in fermented jaggery and water) acting as a natural mordant, and then filling in patterns with natural dyes from plants, roots, and minerals. Authentic Kalamkari is identified by hand-drawn or block-printed designs, natural dyes, traditional patterns, and slight imperfections, with motifs often inspired by nature, mythology, and folklore, each carrying cultural and symbolic significance. Harinath N, Sudheerji, and Siva Reddy are notable master artists of this intricate and time-consuming art.
