This dynamically composed Cheriyal Scroll Wall Plate painting by Dhanalakota Rakesh presents a scene of communal celebration expressed through the coordinated movement of three folk musicians, rendered within an atmosphere of festive procession and natural abundance.
The composition is organized around a diagonal progression of figures moving in step across a background divided into two chromatic registers: a teal-green field on the left and a deep rust-red field on the right. This chromatic division lends the scene a sense of passage, as though the musicians are traversing from one bounded space into another, their procession itself becoming the compositional axis around which the painting unfolds.
At the head of the group, a musician rendered in warm brown skin tones and white striped dhoti, turban and green upper garment, raises a long, curved golden horn to his lips, his body tilted backward and his cheeks visibly full with breath, capturing the physical exertion of sustained sound. In front of him, two drummers, one in a green turban, one in a darker headwrap, carry cylindrical hand drums slung low at the waist, their raised arms and forward-leaning stride conveying the rhythmic momentum of the march. All three figures share the same dense ornamentation, patterned dhotis, beaded necklaces, and anklets, rendered in Cheriyal's characteristic geometric precision, uniting them as a single ensemble rather than isolated individuals.
In the upper register, a large stylized banana tree with broad, ribbed leaves and a hanging cluster of fruit anchors the left portion of the composition, its lush verticality suggesting the natural fertility of the outdoor setting through which the procession passes. Beside it, a large white ornamental bird long white neck presides over the scene from above, while a dark green floral segment occupies the upper right, framing the procession within a wider register of decorative and natural abundance. Small red floral motifs scatter throughout both chromatic zones, maintaining visual continuity between the two halves of the field.
The artist has employed synchronized posture and rhythmic repetition, rather than hierarchical scaling, to establish the scene's meaning: no single musician dominates, but together their aligned bodies and instruments generate a visual rhythm that mirrors the music they perform. This composition expresses a recurring theme in Cheriyal narrative painting: that communal festivity is enacted through collective, coordinated bodies moving through a landscape charged with natural and decorative abundance, the procession itself standing in for the sound and motion that animate village and courtly celebration alike.
