Derived from the Persian word "ustad" or master, Usta art encompass a rich tapestry of techniques. The art form's roots delve deep into history, with the most popular contemporary manifestation being the dazzling German Gold Foil Work. Originally adorning walls and ceilings, this art form transitioned to lightweight materials during the British colonial era, including camel leather, used for transporting oils and fragrances. Usta Kala, an art form originating from Iran, flourished in Mughal durbars before integrating with Indian culture. It gained significant prominence in Bikaner when Raja Rai Singh invited Usta artists, leading to a unique branch of Usta art. This art form's historical and cultural significance is evident in the magnificent Junagarh Fort's Anoop, Chandra, Karan palaces, and Phool Mahal, where the descendants of these artists continue to practice the trade taught by their forefathers, keeping the tradition alive.
