This is an intricately crafted Gomira Mask by Kalyan Chandra Sarkar depicting Durga Maa,hand-fashioned from wood in great detail.
Kushmandi Mask, also known as Gomira Dance Mask is a ritualistic non-vocal dance form mask worn by the local communities during the performance, to usher in good forces and drive out evil forces from the villages. The masks which form the most integral part of the Gomira dance, have now led to the emergance of a small-scale cottage industry in this region. The wood crafted Gomira masks represent the characters of the two distinct forms of dance - the Gomira and the Ram-Vanwas. Historically, these masks were made from 'pure woods' such as neem, however, in modern times, cheaper wood such as mango, pakur, kadam, gamhar are used to cut down on the cost. For the ease of use, paper mache masks are also being made.
This fierce countenance, carved in wood, beautifully highlights the large, almond shaped eyes of Durga Ma, flanked by lush eyelashes and thick eyebrows. Her third eye sits in the centre of her forehead above the magenta bindi. The third eye symbolizes higher wisdom, omniscience, and the destruction of ignorance. While her other two eyes represent the sun (action) and the moon (desire), the central eye, associated with fire, signifies spiritual awakening and the ability to see beyond the physical world into past, present, and future. Her sharp nose and full lips are further adorned with facial designs with flowers made of dots, on her cheeks and chin. She is ornamented with earrings, sindoor and an ornate crown adoring her head.
With a beautiful color palette of blue, magenta, yellow, purple and pink; this rendition of Maa Durga exhibits her in a very graceful and maternal manner . The shades of purple contrasting beautifully with her fair skin and dark hair, while the yellow adds a royal touch to the entire composition. Every chisel mark, every stroke of colour on this mask reflects the artist's devotion to his heritage. The red rims her eyes, while also exhibiting grace and a maternal aura. The magenta pigments contrast beautifully with her fair skin and dark hair, while the gold adds a royal touch to the entire composition.
