This bold Cheriyal mask by artist Sai Kiran belongs to the storytelling tradition of Telangana, where performers use bold, exaggerated faces to represent lively characters from folklore. Made in papier-mache and painted in bright colors, these masks are meant to be expressive, theatrical and instantly readable to an audience.
This mask, painted in a striking red-orange tone, features sharp white horns, curved tusks and a thick black moustache that frames a wide, mischievous grin. The large, rounded eyes give the character an alert and restless expression, while the white forehead mark adds a ritualistic touch. The most intriguing detail is the small scorpion painted on the extended tongue - a subtle sign that this character is not only loud but also unpredictable.Its wide, unflinching eyes and exaggerated features echo the kolli kannu of Drishti paintings, where seeing and being seen becomes a quiet act of protection.
