This is a beautiful Cheriyal mask by artist Sai Kiran, a vibrant tradition that is an offshoot of the Cheriyal scroll paintings of Telangana, created for folk theatre and storytelling performances. Crafted from layered cloth, tamarind paste and natural materials, these masks are lightweight yet striking, designed so that even a distant audience can instantly recognize the character through bold colors and exaggerated features.
This mask carries a dramatic presence with its rounded eyes, arched brows, curled moustache and sharp white fangs. The deep green backdrop frames the pale face, while the small horns, bright lips and extended red tongue add a theatrical intensity. Gold details in the earrings and forehead marking balance the fierce expression with a decorative elegance, giving the mask a personality that is both intimidating and lively. Its wide, unflinching eyes and exaggerated features echo the kolli kannu of Drishti paintings, where seeing and being seen becomes a quiet act of protection.
Like the guardian faces once painted on Tamil Nadu’s walls, this mask turns bold imagery into a watchful presence that marks space and absorbs unseen harm.
One can imagine this character as a comic village guardian, meant to look fearsome enough to scare away evil, yet so expressive that children end up laughing instead of feeling afraid. During performances, this mask could easily belong to a mischievous spirit who growls loudly, makes exaggerated faces and then breaks into playful antics, turning the performance into a moment of delight rather than dread.
