This colorful Cheriyal mask by artist Sai Kiran is part of Telangana’s vibrant storytelling tradition, crafted with tamarind paste, paper and cloth and painted with bold lines so expressions can be read clearly even from a distance. These masks are not just faces; they are personalities used in folk performances to bring characters from oral tales to life.
This mask stands out with its deep red face, a tall split crest rising from the forehead and piercing yellow eyes that seem constantly alert. The thick black moustache, strong nose and sharp white tusks give the character a fierce presence. A white forehead mark sits between the brows, adding a ritual note, while the small scorpion painted on the tongue hints at hidden danger beneath the loud expression. Its wide, unflinching eyes and exaggerated features echo the kolli kannu of Drishti paintings, where seeing and being seen becomes a quiet act of protection. Like the guardian faces once painted on Tamil Nadu’s walls, this mask turns bold imagery into a watchful presence that marks space and absorbs unseen harm.
The character feels less like a villain and more like a strict guardian from village lore - the one who watches silently, notices everything and steps in only when lines are crossed. He is the presence children are warned about and adults quietly respect, a figure meant to remind the community that someone is always watching.

Returns and Replacements

Delivery Timeline
Ready To Ship/In Stock artworks are shipped in 3-4 days. We only accept return requests for Ready to Ship/In stock artworks placed within a week from date of delivery. However, no returns can be accepted for international deliveries.
