This is a divine Pichwai painting by artist Kailash Sahu portraying the divine Shringar of Shrinathji in real gold and natural pigments.
Pichwai painting is a devotional textile art tradition from Nathdwara, Rajasthan, created to be hung behind the murti of Shrinathji, a seven-year old form of Krishna worshipped at the Nathdwara temple. Traditionally rendered in natural pigments, gold, and silver leaf on cloth, Pichwai paintings depict the deity across the seasons and festivals of the Pushtimarg devotional calendar, combining fine detail with a scale meant to fill and frame the sanctum itself.
At the centre of the composition is Shrinathji in his iconic Govardhan Dhari pose, with his left hand raised gracefully, in his gold, patterned garments. He is heavily ornamented in pearl and gemstone necklaces accompanied by flower and lotus garlands, gold and gemstone arm ornaments and earrings, nath (nose ring), and his signature peacock feather with a stylised headdress, the diamonds on his nose and chin adding to his beauty. His hair is braided with gold and gemstone accessories, as he holds a kamal chadi or lotus stalks in his right hand. At his feet are the ritualistic Bhog, Paan Beeda (Beetle leaves), Prasad Dibbi, and a Jal Patra (Water Pot), with two gold bolsters beside him as a large floral bhamandal leafed with gold surrounds him.
Flanking this frame are his beloved companions, cows with their calves, mirroring each other. These cows are adorned with necklaces and have orange handprints on them, signifying divine protection and connection to Krishna. The orange feet and heads of the cows reflect the festive temple traditions of Nathdwara, where the cows were adorned during daily rituals and celebrations, while peacocks stand near him as they stand in the grassland on the banks of river Yamuna filled with blooming lotuses, as the personified sun and moon observe this divinity from the serene blue sky.
Assembling this composition are the layered border with thin white strips encasing a pastel green thick border ornate with blue and pink floret vines.
