This Chhau mask by Dharmendra Sutradhar presents the Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles.
Chhau is a traditional masked dance-drama form from eastern India, especially Odisha, Jharkhand and West Bengal, in which large, brightly painted masks are central to the performer’s transformation into mythological or divine characters.
At the centre is the distinctive face of Lord Ganesha, identified by his elephant head and prominently curved trunk. His eyes are almond-shaped and slightly narrowed, giving the deity a calm yet commanding expression. The eyes are outlined in gold, with small circular golden details within them. Between the eyes is an elaborate gold-painted tilak, composed of vertically arranged curved and pointed forms that extend downwards towards the centre of the face. The forehead and cheeks retain the deep blue-black ground, allowing the gold ornamentation to stand out strongly.
Ganesha’s most prominent feature is his long, downward-curving trunk, which bends towards the viewer’s right before curling upwards slightly at its tip. The trunk is articulated through a series of closely spaced horizontal gold lines, creating a rhythmic texture and emphasising its three-dimensional form. The same linear treatment extends across the lower portion of the face, giving the mask a highly decorative quality. On either side of the trunk are small protruding tusks, while the large, rounded ears extend outward from the face.
The ears are particularly elaborate, extending almost horizontally from either side of the head. Their surfaces are divided into repeated curved bands of blue, bronze and gold, producing a layered appearance. The repeated lines create a strong sense of movement while also framing the face. Below the ears, the lower edges of the mask continue the same rhythmic gold detailing, visually enclosing Ganesha’s face.
Above the face is an elaborate crown-like headdress. At its centre is a rounded ornamental medallion surrounded by radiating gold strokes, resembling a stylised floral or sun-like motif. Above this, the tall blue headdress is covered with numerous small gold star- or flower-shaped motifs, distributed across its surface. The outer edge is bordered by repeated gold strokes, creating a continuous decorative frame. The central crest is further enclosed by a series of curved bands that emphasise its verticality.
Surrounding the upper headdress is a striking green, leaf-like halo. Numerous overlapping leaves radiate outward from behind the crown, each articulated with incised veins and darker green detailing. This foliage-like structure creates a naturalistic contrast with the more geometric ornamentation of the central mask. The green halo also gives the composition a strong sense of expansion, making the mask appear larger and more imposing.
The mask employs a carefully controlled palette of deep indigo-blue, bronze, gold and green, with the natural dark ground allowing the metallic-looking gold lines to become the principal decorative element. The repeated strokes around the ears, crown, trunk and borders create a consistent visual rhythm, while the green foliage introduces a contrasting organic quality.
As a Chhau mask, the work transforms the familiar image of Ganesha into a larger-than-life theatrical presence. The exaggerated proportions, frontal orientation, enlarged ears, prominent trunk and expansive headdress ensure that the character remains visually legible in performance. At the same time, the intricate gold ornamentation and leaf-like halo give the mask a strong decorative presence. The result is a representation of Lord Ganesha that brings together devotional iconography and the dramatic, highly stylised visual language of Chhau, turning the deity’s familiar attributes into an expressive performance object.

Returns and Replacements
