This striking wooden sculpture, masterfully crafted by Kalyan Chandra Sarkar, is a Gomira mask intricately carved to depict scenes from the Ramayana. The mask encapsulates the cultural and spiritual vibrancy of the Rajbongshi community’s folk art traditions, portraying a narrative of companionship, devotion, surrender, and righteousness. The sculpture is structured as a narrative tower, with multiple tiers vividly illustrating key episodes from the epic. Each level features finely detailed characters such as Lord Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, and the vanaras (monkey warriors), embodying moments of deep devotion and heroic valor.
At the base is the revered figure of Hanuman, the devoted servant of Lord Rama, whose expression of determination and humility symbolizes unwavering faith and loyalty. The mask’s vertical composition centers on Hanuman, progressing upwards to other significant figures and scenes that emphasize the themes of surrender and righteousness. The craftsmanship is impeccable, with each figure meticulously rendered to capture the essence of their roles in the narrative. The natural wood finish enhances the rustic charm, adding a timeless quality that invites reflection on the enduring values of devotion and moral integrity. This mask is not only a sacred artifact for ritualistic dance performances but also a profound representation of spiritual symbolism, cultural heritage, and artistic excellence.
