This intricate wooden sculpture, a magnificent Gomira mask crafted by artisan Kalyan Chandra Sarkar, beautifully captures the rich cultural and spiritual heritage of West Bengal, particularly within the Rajbongshi community. These masks play a central role in traditional dance rituals, embodying divine figures and motifs from Hindu mythology. The composition begins with a striking female face at the base, serving as the foundation for a layered narrative of cosmic significance.
Above the woman's head, a lion symbolizes strength and power, leading to a depiction of multi-armed Shakti, embodying the feminine cosmic energy. At the apex of the sculpture stands Lord Shiva, the supreme ascetic, holding his signature trident and adorned with serpentine ornaments. Below the divine figure of Shiva is the sacred bull (Nandi), representing wisdom, framed within detailed arches that add depth and structure to the piece. The smooth, natural wooden finish highlights the intricate patterns and textures, blending artistry with spiritual symbolism. This Gomira mask is not only a sacred object but also a testament to the enduring legacy of traditional Indian folk art, offering a profound connection to cultural heritage and devotion.
