About the Artwork +
This intricate Kalamkari painting by artist Kanukurthi Guna Sekhar Sai presents a captivating narrative centered around Nandiswara, the revered divine bull and loyal attendant of Lord Shiva, intertwined with a broader cosmic depiction and various divine figures. The artwork exemplifies the Kalamkari style with its distinctive hand-drawing on fabric using a 'kalam' and natural dyes, creating a rich tapestry of mythology.
The central and largest figure in the main circular medallion is Nandiswara, depicted in a powerful, seated posture, with his characteristic bull-head and human body. He is adorned with ornaments, and his form is rendered in a prominent pinkish hue, holding a musical instrument like a drum (mridangam). The attention to detail on his adornments, facial features, and the texture of his skin is meticulous. He is positioned within a large circular frame, adorned with intricate patterns.
Surrounding this central medallion, and in multiple smaller panels above and to the sides, are numerous vignettes depicting various deities, mythological scenes, and celestial beings. These smaller figures are finely detailed, each telling its own part of a larger cosmic or epic narrative, typical of Kalamkari's storytelling tradition. You can observe gods, goddesses, sages and episodes from the Shiva Purana or other scriptures related to Nandiswara's devotion and role. These panels tell the story of Nandi and his devotion to lord Shiva, who is portrayed with this classic blue complexion, wearing a tiger skin, sitting on Kailasa, with his ever loyal companion and vahana - Nandi the bull by his side.
The predominant color scheme includes earthy reds, browns, and oranges, along with touches of green, blue, and white, all derived from natural dyes. The background of the central circular panel is a deep red, making Nandiswara stand out vibrantly, while other sections of the background vary, often being a muted cream or natural fabric color, or darker tones to emphasize the figures. The entire painting is bordered by a continuous decorative strip at the top, featuring mythical creatures or deities, all rendered with the characteristic Kalamkari outlines and infill patterns. The top and bottom edges of the fabric show raw, unfinished edges, indicating it is likely a large textile piece designed for display.
This Kalamkari painting, with its complex narrative, detailed figures, and traditional color palette, offers a profound devotional artwork centered on the revered Nandiswara, showcasing the artistic mastery and spiritual depth of Kanukurthi Guna Sekhar Sai.
