Hailing from Ahmedabad, Gujarat born into the family of Applique artisans Karthik Chauhan has inherited the art of making this craft from observing and learning his family members, he has played a huge part in taking this art to global level. He is the 2019 recipient of the Kamala Award for his Excellence in Applique Craft. His work possesses the exquisite touch and expertise of a master artisan, as well as an unerring blend of concept and eye-catching harmony. Kartik ji has led several cluster developments programmes and craft workshops. His experiments with the craft have resulted in new designs, which have provided new input to appliqué artisans. He is very innovative and always believed in coming up with fresh ideas every now and then, so as tackle plagiarism and describes “you should come up with new ideas and designs, before people even begin selling the designs, they copied from you.” He has also participated in training programmes with designers and artisans. Kartik Chauhan has visited several countries to promote the art of appliqué work.
