About the Artwork +
Umang extends her arm, and detects lumps in her breasts. The brightness of her blue attire is contrasted with caliginous shrubbery illustrating the severity of this moment in time. As she grapples with this self-discovery, she soon realises that the tips of her fingers might have become an instrument to save her life.
These are stories of real breast cancer survivors. Your purchase will help provide financial assistance for the treatment of underprivileged cancer patients. 100% of the proceeds will go to The Apollo Cancer Foundation (ACF). Read Umang’s complete story here.
Note: All of these artworks are available with frames and the quoted price is inclusive of the frame.
Umang
Song of the loom
Umang, fierce as fire, relentless as water.
The first graduate from her village.
A village of traditional weavers, neck-deep in poverty.
They weaved their rustic yet vibrant fabric,
Day in and day out, their looms clicked.
No takers for their work, their hope dwindled.
But Umang stepped up.
At fashion school, she toiled away,
perfecting the authentic fabric of her ancestors.
Experimenting with textures, patterns and colours.
She started the ‘song of the loom,’
A clothing line that took the fashion world by storm.
She gave an identity to her people and their art,
She rekindled the fire in their hearths and hearts.
Twenty years have since passed,
Now she has a new challenge to surpass.
Her eyes, seasoned to notice every fabric’s texture,
Noticed a change in the texture of her right breast.
The puckering of skin and a dimple,
Her right breast looked different from the left.
As determined as ever, she couldn’t let that pass.
She stood in front of the mirror,
Raised her left arm and looked closer.
The skin of her breast was uneven, skin folded in places,
a few dimples here and there.
She knew what it meant,
It was time for her to act.
To smoothen the puckering of the breast.
A few months have passed now.
Umang couldn’t be more thankful for her sharp eyes,
They helped her conquer breast cancer.
Now she’s ready again to take on the world,
To make the loom sing again.
"Step 6 - With the flat of your fingers, check for any lumps in the breast or the underarm region."
