This vibrant Warli artwork by Krushna Sadashiv Bhusare depicts the Lagna Chauk, or marriage square, one of the most sacred and important ritual compositions in the Warli painting tradition. Traditionally drawn on the walls of a home ahead of a wedding, the chauk is far more than decoration; it is an invocation, painted to draw the blessings of fertility and prosperity upon a new union.
Warli painting is a traditional tribal art form from Maharashtra, India, practised by the Warli people of the Sahyadri hill region around Thane, Palghar and Dahanu. Rendered in a spare, geometric vocabulary of circles, triangles and squares that stand in for the sun and moon, mountains and trees, and sacred enclosures, the paintings were traditionally made with a white rice-paste mixture applied with a bamboo stick onto a wall first prepared with red-brown mud and cow dung. Their broad themes span gods and goddesses, the harvest season, the natural world and the community's many rituals, with weddings among the most significant occasions to be marked in paint. Krushna Sadashiv Bhusare works within this living tradition, carrying forward its ritual vocabulary onto canvas for a wider contemporary audience.
At the heart of this composition lies the chauk itself: a rectangular field bordered by numerous concentric bands of fine white chevron and triangular patterning, giving the impression of a richly woven textile frame. Within this innermost rectangle stand the sacred emblems associated with the marriage ritual: an hourglass-shaped human figure formed of two triangles joined at their tips, a ladder, a curved horn-like object, a crescent moon, and other small ritual implements scattered across the deep brown ground. Radiating outward from this central chauk, the artist has filled every surrounding surface with the exuberant life of the Warli community: rows of dancers linking hands in the circular formations typical of tarpa dance, thatched-roof huts, a bullock cart, peacocks and birds in flight, a swinging cot bearing an animal figure, and dense borders of millet and other crops springing up along all four edges of the composition, with the sun rising above it all.
Central to the marriage chauk is the belief in Palaghata, the Warli goddess of fertility, traditionally represented by that same hourglass form of two triangles joined at the apex, symbolising the union of masculine and feminine creative energy. Painted the day before a wedding by savasinis, married women whose husbands are living, the chauk is ritually unveiled before the ceremony to invite Palaghata's protection over the couple against misfortune and to bless them with prosperity and children. The dense activity surrounding the chauk in this composition, the dancing, music and feasting, mirrors the communal celebration that traditionally accompanies its creation, songs being sung as the sacred square takes shape on the wall.
Bringing together ritual symbol and lived celebration within a single, densely worked composition, this artwork captures the marriage chauk not as a static icon but as the living centre of a community event. Krushna Sadashiv Bhusare's rendering honours both the sacred precision the form demands and the sheer, joyful abundance of the wedding festivities that surround it.
