About the Artwork +

This monochrome Kalamkari painting by artist Harinath N. is a breathtaking exploration of the Tree of Life motif, a symbol of the interconnectedness of all living things. In the Srikalahasti tradition, such intricate works are hand-drawn using a bamboo "kalam" (pen) and natural dyes, a process that requires immense precision to achieve the high-contrast density of the linework.

At the center of the composition stands a monumental tree, its trunk and branches erupting into an explosion of floral blossoms and lush leaves that fill the entire upper arch of the canvas. The tree is a masterclass in pattern-making, with every leaf and petal featuring different internal textures—from fine hatching to geometric scales—that create a sense of vibrant, organic movement. This "Kalpavriksha" or divine wish-fulfilling tree represents the abundance of nature and is a core element in Indian mythological art.

Beneath the protective canopy, the artist has depicted a sanctuary of wildlife. Two pairs of peacocks flank the base of the tree, their magnificent trains fanned out with feathers that echo the intricate floral patterns of the branches above. A herd of deer is scattered across the base, with some standing in vigilant pairs and others gazing upward, their slender forms providing a delicate contrast to the heavy, ornate details of the foliage.

The entire scene is set against a deep, earthy brown background, which allows the cream-colored figures and vegetation to radiate with a sculptural quality. By combining these sacred animals with the eternal Tree of Life, Harinath N. transforms the fabric into a meditative space that celebrates the harmony of the natural world.

Harinath N

Harinath N
Harinath N. is a highly accomplished artist from the mesmerising town of Srikalahasti, with an artistic journey spanning over 35 years during which he has mastered the intricacies of an ancient art form. His exceptional talent has been recognised by numerous awards and recognitions, including the National Kalidas Academy Award. He is renowned for his unique depiction of scenes from Indian epics and the Tree of Life stories.

Kalamkari

Kalamkari is an ancient Indian art form of painting or printing on fabric using natural dyes and intricate penwork, with its name literally meaning 'craftwork done with a pen'. Flourishing under the Mughals and later the Golconda and Coromandel Sultanates, its prominent centers are Srikalahasti and Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh. This art form traditionally depicts Hindu mythological epics like Mahabharata and Ramayana, featuring deities and common occurrences, characterized by rounded faces, large eyes, and detailed costumes. Legend connects its origin to Radha teaching the art in Machilipatnam and its use on Hanuman's flag. The meticulous technique involves preparing cotton or silk fabric, outlining designs with a 'kalam' (bamboo or palm stick dipped in fermented jaggery and water) acting as a natural mordant, and then filling in patterns with natural dyes from plants, roots, and minerals. Authentic Kalamkari is identified by hand-drawn or block-printed designs, natural dyes, traditional patterns, and slight imperfections, with motifs often inspired by nature, mythology, and folklore, each carrying cultural and symbolic significance. Harinath N, Sudheerji, and Siva Reddy are notable master artists of this intricate and time-consuming art.
