About the Artwork +
This dynamic and highly animated Srikalahasti-style Kalamkari painting by Kanukurthi Guna Sekhar Sai depicts the epic Ramayana narrative of Lord Hanuman flying across the ocean, carrying the majestic Mount Dronagiri to retrieve the life-saving Sanjeevani herbs. The composition completely omits any outer borders, allowing the raw, mythic energy of the figures to expand directly to the very edges of the textile canvas.
The background is split vertically into a rich crimson-red backdrop on the left and a brilliant, solid cerulean-blue sky on the right. Moving dynamically across this space is the green-skinned Lord Hanuman in a powerful, mid-air warrior stance (veerasana). His head features a long, stylized red jawline topped by an elaborate, multi-tiered golden crown, and he firmly holds a long, segmented golden mace (gada) across his body. True to the classical temple-cloth traditions, his body serves as a literal sanctum for his devotion; positioned directly at his heart are the meticulous figures of Lord Rama and Sita, signifying their eternal presence within his soul.
The body of Hanuman has been utilised as a canvas, beautifully depicting the episodic trials and dialogues of his journey. Near the curve of his long green tail, a highly significant sub-scene depicts Hanuman's courtly confrontation and discussion with the multi-headed demon king, Ravana, after being captured by the asuras in Lanka, when he coiled his tail to form a high pile and sat on it.
At the absolute bottom left, two devoted vanaras (monkeys) are shown locked in an intimate, strategic conversation. Emerging from the swirling waves near his knee is a fierce aquatic monster, capturing the specific Ramayana episode of a cursed nymph, Simhika, who was trapped in a monstrous form and subsequently absolved and liberated from her curse by Hanuman's divine touch. In the upper right sky, the multi-colored, boulder-strewn mass of Mount Dronagiri, filled with trees, floats gracefully, detailed with orange, pink, and green mineral pigments.
Anchoring the entire composition at the absolute base is a dedicated horizontal strip, intricately detailed with continuous motifs and active figurines that systematically chart the rhythmic movement of Hanuman flying across the land to retrieve the sacred mountain. Executed masterfully with a traditional bamboo pen (kalam), this borderless textile stands as a spectacular, narrative-dense folk masterpiece.
