This beautiful Madhubani painting by Ambika Devi uses a structured composition to depict two pivotal states of Lord Buddha, combining spiritual narrative with the dense, decorative textures of the Mithila tradition. The artwork is divided into two distinct vertical registers, each framed by a rhythmic border of alternating red and yellow almond-shaped petals that guides the viewer through the sequence.
In the panel to the left, Buddha is portrayed in a state of deep meditation, seated atop a large, stylized pink lotus pedestal. He is rendered with a warm orange complexion, and his serenity is emphasized by a vibrant yellow halo encircled by a turquoise-and-red "bodhi leaf" pattern. His robes are meticulously detailed with fine Kachni (line-work) in red and white stripes, while the surrounding space is filled with a thick canopy of grey leaves and winding green vines, suggesting the sacred forest of his enlightenment. His right hand is in the Vitarka mudra, which symbolises teaching.
The right panel transitions to a scene of ultimate peace, depicting Buddha in a reclining pose. He is surrounded by a dense cluster of orange blossoms, and to his left, a series of blue-and-red scalloped shapes represents a sacred body of water. This dual-panel approach allows the artist to capture both the internal discipline of meditation and the external tranquility of the Buddha's final rest within a single, balanced frame.

Madhubani art, also known as Mithila art, originates from the Mithila region of Bihar, India, and is celebrated for its intricate patterns, vibrant colors, and profound cultural significance. Traditionally created by women on walls and floors during auspicious occasions, these paintings depict Hindu mythology, nature, folklore, and daily life, often incorporating Hindu deities, scenes from epics, and natural motifs like flowers and animals. Legend suggests its origins trace back to King Janak's commission for Sita's wedding. Artists traditionally use natural pigments from plants and minerals, applied with homemade bamboo and cotton brushes, filling the entire surface with fine detail. While some contemporary artists use synthetic paints, many maintain traditional methods.
