This Madhubani painting by Pratima Bharti draws from the ancient Godhana (tattoo) style of Bihar. The artist presents a multi-layered narrative of the entire animal kingdom, categorized into concentric realms.
At the core of the composition is a dense, vibrating field of hundreds of tiny fish, representing the waters and the source of all life. As the eye moves outward through the rhythmic grey and black rings, the narrative expands to include the terrestrial and aerial worlds. Small, meticulously detailed Animals and Birds are integrated into the circular flow, each rendered with the fine hatching and "tattoo-style" precision of the Godhana school. These figures act as guardians of the different cosmic layers, showing that in the Mithila worldview, no creature exists in isolation.
Technically, the piece is a masterclass in scale. The artist maintains a perfect balance between the sheer number of individual motifs and the overall structural harmony of the mandala. The subtle use of red, blue, and orange accents helps distinguish the different species, allowing the viewer to discover a hidden birds and walking animal amidst the sea of fish. Madhubani art, also known as Mithila art, originates from the Mithila region of Bihar, India, and is celebrated for its intricate patterns, vibrant colors, and profound cultural significance.
