About the Artwork +

Ambika Devi in this Madhubani painting depicts one of the most famous love stories in the Hindu Mythology, of that of Radha and Krishi. Though according to mythology, Radha and Krishna were never formally married as Radha's deep love and devotion for Krishna led to Radha and Krishna uniting into one being, staying together eternally as one soul, negating the need for a formal marriage, in this painting we see the traditional ritual in the Hindu marriage where garlands are exchanged between the bride and the groom. The worship of Radha Krishna in Mithila in Bihar where the Madhubani paintings originate, is deeply rooted in the Bhakti tradition of Hinduism emphasizing unwavering devotion and complete surrender to Krishna. Devotees express their love for Radha Krishna through songs, offerings, prayers, and paintings like this one. This painting depicting Radha Krishna's love for each other symbolizes selfless love, divine union, and a spiritual connection between an individual soul (Radha) and the divine (Krishna), aspiring the devotees to reach such a level of devotion and love. Mithila is known for the Raslila tradition which is the dance drama depicting the selfless love of and playfulness between Radha and Krishna popularly performed around Janmashtami even today. This painting of Radha and Krishna getting married among loved ones is a depiction of their eternal union in haven.

Ambika Devi, a celebrated Madhubani artist from Rashidpur, Bihar, began her artistic journey at age 12, continuing a centuries-old tradition. She is renowned for her mastery of 'Line Work' in Madhubani Painting, utilizing only red and black to create mesmerizing designs, though her work also extends to broader palettes and canvases. Her art has gained international recognition through events like 'Kala Sangam' and features in prominent newspapers and the CDC website during the pandemic. Ambika Devi's significant contributions to art were honored with the National Award in 2009, making her a bridge where tradition meets innovation.

Madhubani

Madhubani art, also known as Mithila art, originates from the Mithila region of Bihar, India, and is celebrated for its intricate patterns, vibrant colors, and profound cultural significance. Traditionally created by women on walls and floors during auspicious occasions, these paintings depict Hindu mythology, nature, folklore, and daily life, often incorporating Hindu deities, scenes from epics, and natural motifs like flowers and animals. Legend suggests its origins trace back to King Janak's commission for Sita's wedding. Artists traditionally use natural pigments from plants and minerals, applied with homemade bamboo and cotton brushes, filling the entire surface with fine detail. While some contemporary artists use synthetic paints, many maintain traditional methods. The art form gained international recognition in the 1960s and has since expanded to various mediums beyond walls, including canvases and textiles. Distinct styles like Kachni (line art), Bharni (filling art), Godna (tattoo art), Tantrik (spiritual), and Kohbar (marriage rituals) exist, each with unique characteristics. Madhubani art holds immense cultural, social, and religious importance, preserving stories, providing livelihood for women artists, and serving as a vibrant expression of India's rich heritage.
