About the Artwork +
This dynamic Mata ni Pachedi by artist Sanjay Chittara offers a sprawling, multi-layered vision of New Delhi. It vividly captures India's capital—a proud, intricate canvas that weaves together vibrant contemporary life, iconic historical landmarks, and rich traditional culture.
Mata ni Pachedi is a traditional cloth painting from Gujarat, which literally means "behind the mother goddess." Traditionally depicting deities and their myths, it is known for its strong lines, deep colors (often red, black, and white), and narrative scenes.
At the center of the composition is the City's Narrative, a bustling and continuous flow of modern Indian life that symbolizes the unending energy, complexity, and historical depth of the metropolis. The painting is horizontally divided into three main zones: The top layer beautifully illustrates Delhi's contemporary face, showing from left to right, the distinct Lotus Temple, the modern architecture of IIT Delhi, the expansive Airport Terminal 3, and other significant buildings, all under a blue sky traversed by red airplanes, representing flights. The expansive middle layer, dominated by a deep red, dynamically portrays the vibrant street life and iconic landmarks: India Gate stands prominently at the center, flanked by the historic Qutub Minar, the astronomical Jantar Mantar, and the majestic Red Fort, amidst various modes of transport like trains, auto-rickshaws, bikes, taxis, and cycles. This layer also teems with life, depicting various food stalls, festive celebrations, children playing cricket and other games, and people in vibrant clothes, showcasing the rich tapestry of Indian culture and daily life. The bottom layer, rendered in bright yellow, depicts scenes of traditional rural activities, including fishing, agriculture, and animal husbandry, along with figures sitting and meditating, connecting the narrative to broader Indian heritage and rural roots.
The color palette is characterized by three bold, distinct horizontal bands: a deep, striking red dominates the central, active space; bright yellow anchors the bottom layer of traditional life and the Taj Mahal; and a vibrant blue sky caps the top layer. All narrative elements are rendered in white, black and intricate line work, creating a sharp, graphic pattern where modern architecture and historic sites stand out dramatically against the solid colored fields.
This culturally significant and visually arresting artwork is a great addition to any collection, serving as a powerful, contemporary commentary on Indian urbanization, history, and tradition rendered in a spectacular, ancient art form.
