About the Artwork +
Mata Ni Pachedi, the "cloth of the Mother Goddess" from Gujarat, is a vibrant textile art serving as a portable shrine. Traditionally hand-painted or block-printed, these cloths narrate divine stories and feature intricate details. This set of four framed panels by Dilip Chitara showcases the significant "Tree of Life" motif, symbolizing interconnectedness and the cycle of life. Two panels depict celestial angels, representing divine attendants and blessings, while the other two feature peacocks, embodying beauty, auspiciousness, and vibrant life around the sacred tree.
These panels exhibit characteristics typical of Mata Ni Pachedi, including intricate linework, potentially bold colors within the paintings, a suggestive narrative of a sacred scene, and stylized forms. The framing indicates a contemporary adaptation, making this traditional art accessible for modern display. The arrangement of the Tree of Life with celestial beings and peacocks creates a harmonious and spiritually evocative composition, reflecting core symbolic elements of this folk art.
The continued creation of Mata Ni Pachedi by artists like Dilip Chitara is vital for preserving and evolving this cultural heritage. By adapting the art form into framed pieces, they introduce it to a wider audience, showcasing its artistic skill and raising awareness of its unique traditions. This set beautifully exemplifies the relevance of Mata Ni Pachedi in contemporary times, honoring its roots while finding new avenues for appreciation and expression.
The paintings have 4" dark beige mount with 0.25" gold rim + 2" wooden frame.
