This Madhubani painting by artist Ambika Devi represents Ardhanarishvara, the composite androgynous form of the Hindu deities Shiva and Parvati. The figure is split perfectly down the center, symbolizing the inseparable unity of the masculine and feminine energies that create the universe. Originating from the Mithila region of India, Madhubani paintings are a vibrant folk art form traditionally created by women using fingers, twigs, and matchsticks to depict nature and mythology through intricate geometric patterns. The left side (from the viewer's perspective) depicts Shiva with his signature blue complexion, holding a trishula (trident) adorned with a damaru (drum), and wearing a serpent around his neck. The right side depicts Parvati, rendered with a fair complexion, wearing a vibrant red and green patterned sari and elaborate traditional jewelry, including a prominent nose ring and a decorated veil.
The central deity is framed within a large circular mandala, which features multiple concentric bands of geometric patterns, including colorful radiating lines and repeating triangular motifs. The background behind the figure within the circle is a textured orange field, which provides a warm glow that makes the central form pop. Outside the mandala, the four corners of the rectangular composition are filled with lush, green interlocking leaf patterns, typical of the natural themes found in the Mithila tradition.
The entire work is enclosed within a sophisticated thematic border. This border features alternating panels of the trishula (Shiva's trident) and the damaru (Shiva's drum) against a red background, framed by green margins. By combining the Bharni style for bold color fills with the Kachni style for intricate line details on the deity's clothing and the surrounding leaves, Ambika Devi creates a powerful visual representation of divine balance and cosmic harmony.

Returns and Replacements
We offer replacements or repairs if your artwork arrives damaged or has a quality issue. As each artwork is handcrafted, we do not accept returns or refunds for orders received in the expected condition.
Delivery Timeline
Ready To Ship/In Stock artworks are shipped in 3-4 days. We only accept return requests for Ready to Ship/In stock artworks placed within a week from date of delivery. However, no returns can be accepted for international deliveries.

Madhubani art, also known as Mithila art, originates from the Mithila region of Bihar, India, and is celebrated for its intricate patterns, vibrant colors, and profound cultural significance.
