About the Artwork +
This Kalighat painting by Uttam Chitrakar offers a contemporary rendition of traditional sacred and social themes, seamlessly blending 19th-century folk art techniques with a poignant commentary on ecological balance and human responsibility toward the environment.
Originating near the Kalighat Temple in Kolkata, this art style has historically been celebrated for its ability to capture social trends, deep allegories and changing cultural dynamics with absolute economy of line. This artwork captures a monumental depiction of Mother Nature surrounded by a diverse, vibrant gathering of living beings dependent on her protection.
At the heart of the composition stands a male figure representing humanity, lifting a large, beautifully adorned but disembodied visage of the Goddess as Mother Nature. With both arms raised high, he firmly supports the goddess's face, which features a majestic golden crown (mukut), a sacred third eye of wisdom and the signature elongated, stylized almond eyes typical of Kalighat iconography. Surrounding her face is a vast, circular green canopy intricately patterned with scales of dense leaves, serving as a powerful halo of life and fertility.
Densely packed into the frame around this central figure is an entire ecosystem of animals and humans, completing the vibrant scene. To the left, a herd of elephants, a horse, a lion, deer and monkeys look onward with wide, alert eyes, while to the right, cows, a dog, a giraffe and a goat assemble alongside humans.
In a remarkably modern twist on the lower right, a small orange passenger car is depicted with passengers peering through the windows, while a white cat hitches a ride on its roof. In classical Kalighat iconography, the depiction of such complex, overlapping tableaus, sheltered beneath tall, vertical golden-brown structures or pillars in the background, often symbolises the codependence of urban development and the natural world, making this crowded harmony a clever nod to how environmental awareness dominates modern global spaces.
The painting features the Kalighat school's signature bold outlines, using thick, sweeping strokes. By documenting a ubiquitous slice of universal ecological truth through centuries-old folk art conventions, this piece beautifully honors the living, evolving spirit of Bengal’s regional art heritage.
