This serene Gond painting by Kailash Pradhan features a pair of elephants walking beneath a stylized tree, illustrating the harmony and grandeur of the natural world. Originating in the tribal Gond community, which lives in close communion with nature, these paintings portray a strong belief that every aspect of nature is animate and sacred.Set against a neutral, off-white background, the work utilizes a rich palette of primary and secondary colors to define its intricate forms. The composition is divided into two distinct levels, showcasing the relationship between the earth and the canopy.
The lower half of the painting is occupied by two elephants that overlap slightly to create a sense of depth. The larger elephant in the back is rendered in vibrant shades of blue and purple, while the smaller one in the foreground features a warm terracotta-orange head and a dark, earth-toned body. Consistent with the Gond artistic tradition, each animal is divided into decorative segments filled with traditional patterns, including scales, dots, and a diamond-shaped herringbone design on their trunks and limbs.
Rising from a slender trunk behind the elephants, the tree is reimagined as a series of overlapping, circular foliage clusters. These circles are rendered in soft pastel shades of pink, blue, orange, and grey, and the entire canopy is unified by a dense veined pattern that suggests the intricate biological networks within a single tree. This painting showcases three of Kailash Pradhan's signature styles, the unique star- shaped pattern, called "Cher Chera", inspired by the Gond community's Cherchera festival; Parsa Paan pattern which resembles betel leaves, which are offered as a symbol of respect at significant events like weddings and social gatherings, and are also used in traditional medicine for digestion and respiratory issues amidst the Gond tribe; and the Khaddar pattern, inspired by the fibres of Khadi cotton cloth.Kailash Pradhan’s use of negative space allows the complex textures of the elephants and the tree to remain distinct, serving as a visual celebration of the ancient spiritual connection between the animal kingdom and the sacred flora of the Adivasi landscape.
