About
A Group Exhibition of Master Pichwai Artists
Presented by MeMeraki, India’s First Culture-Tech Platform
‘Parampara: Pichwai’s Past, Present and Future’ opens at the Craft Council of Telangana, Hyderabad, from 27th September to 3rd October, featuring over 40 works by five master artists working in the Pichwai tradition. As custodians of centuries-old heritage, each artist has devoted decades to perfecting and promoting the art form.
The exhibition is curated by MeMeraki, India’s first culture- tech platform, which works to enable generational master artists from the remotest corners of India to reach a global audience.
The exhibition takes its name from the Sanskrit word ‘parampara’, meaning an unbroken chain of tradition passed from teacher to student. True to its title, the show traces the arc of Pichwai painting across time, opening with a decades old Pichwai, moving through pieces rooted firmly in classical convention, and closing with contemporary reinterpretations of the form. The artworks on view span an equally wide range of technique and material: some are rendered in natural stone pigments in the centuries-old manner, several incorporate genuine gold and silver leaf, and others are painting in acrylic, reflecting how a living tradition continues to absorb new tools without losing its devotional core.
The exhibition brings together the work of five master artists: Dinesh Soni, Jayesh Sharma, Naveen Soni, Shehzaad Ali Sherani, and Trilok Soni, each representing a distinct lineage and approach within the Nathdwara school.
The Artists
Dinesh Soni
Dinesh Soni is a third-generation Pichwai artist from Bhilwara, Rajasthan, who has spent over three decades preserving and teaching the art form. He inherits his practice from his grandfather, Badrilal Chitrakar, and his award-winning father, Prabhulal, and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. A full-time Pichwai artist, Dinesh Soni has been recognised with the National Award and the National Merit Award for his commitment to maintaining the purity of the form. His body of work spans traditional subjects from Shrinathji and cows to the Tree of Life and festive temple scenes.
Naveen Soni
Naveen Soni is a young master artist of Pichwai from Bhilwara, Rajasthan, and the newest generation of a family long devoted to the art form. He trained under his grandfather, Shilp Guru Shri Badrilal Chitrakar, and his father, a National Awardee in Miniature and Pichwai art. Naveen works fluently across the Udaipur, Nathdwara and Mughal schools of painting, using natural stone pigments and gold leaf on cloth and paper to depict the Shringar, or sacred ornamentation of Lord Krishna. Alongside grand traditional depictions of Shrinathji, he has experimented with fusing contemporary sensibilities into the miniature idiom, and has exhibited his work across India.
Shehzaad Ali Sherani
Shehzaad Ali Sherani, affectionately known as ‘Bhaiyyaji,’ is a highly regarded artist from Kishangarh, representing the 14th generation of a lineage tracing back to Ujala Khan, who was brought to Kishangarh from the Delhi courts. As a child, his interest in art was cultivated by his father, Dr. Fayyaz, a polyglot scholar, art critic and art historian, through exposure to numerous books. Encouraged by his father, Ali began studying fresco and other Rajasthani miniature painting techniques under Padmashri Kripal Singh Shekhawat, before his father guided him toward the Kishangarh school in particular, both for its regional significance and because it faced near-extinction. Ali spent his career recreating this poetic imagery in exquisite Radha-Krishna paintings, alongside his devotional depictions of Shrinathji. Now 75, he maintains a daily painting discipline from 5 AM to 7 PM. His mastery of Pichwai and Kishangarh art has earned him the State Award and the Rajasthan Lalit Kala Akademmi Commendation Certificate, and a piece by him was recently commissioned by designer Manish Malhotra for an intricately hand-painted blouse for Nita Ambani. His son, Faizan, now works alongside him, carrying the family’s art to a global audience.
Trilok Soni
Trilok Soni, the sole creator of Dwarkadhish style within the Pichwai tradition, the first time Krishna’s form at Dwarka has been rendered at full scale within this 400-year-old painting tradition. Trained in the guru-shishya Parampara under his father, Shilp Guru Shri Badrilal Chitrakar, and shaped alongside his four elder brothers in the family workshop, Trilok has extended the Nathdwara idiom while remaining rooted in its devotional foundations. He is a National Awardee and has demonstrated his work at numerous national and international venues.
Jayesh Sharma
Jayesh Sharma resides in Nathdwara, Rajasthan, and has been a Pichwai artist for more than four decades. His family has practised the art for 400 years, with nine generations of Pichwai painters linked to the Shrinathji temple in Nathdwara, a lineage he is now passing on by teaching his own children to carry the legacy forward. He enjoys experimenting within his paintings while keeping the underlying beliefs and stories untouched, and considers his craft both a commitment and a responsibility toward society; one of his favourite themes is the Annakut festivities. His paintings can be seen at the Shrinathji temples in Nathdwara and Udaipur, the Badrinath temple in Manasa, Madhya Pradesh, the Dakor temple in Gujarat, and the Bada Mandir Haveli in Mumbai. He has been honoured with a Prashasti Patra by Indra Daman Goswami ji for his services to the Lord’s Wall at Nathdwara — a body of work that embodies the adage, “Allow your passion to become your mission, and it will one day become your vocation.”
