This ensemble of four Patan Patola textiles by Shyam Sunilbhai Soni exemplifies the refined geometry and chromatic brilliance of Gujarat’s celebrated double-ikat tradition. Each square panel presents a dense lattice of symmetrical motifs precisely aligned through the laborious resist-dyeing of both warp and weft before weaving. Jewel-toned fields of crimson, violet and green create distinct yet harmonious identities for each piece, while white, pink and yellow highlights animate the intricate patterning.
Characteristic of Patan Patola, the designs are perfectly mirrored along vertical and horizontal axes, forming mandala-like compositions that convey balance, protection and prosperity. Finely articulated borders frame the central grids, echoing temple architecture and sacred diagrams, and reinforcing the textiles’ ritual and ceremonial associations. As a set, the four works demonstrate the virtuosity of contemporary Patola artists, sustaining a hereditary craft lineage renowned for mathematical precision, colorfast natural dyes and enduring cultural symbolism.
