This exquisite, highly detailed Pattachitra scroll painting—a traditional, cloth-based art form from Odisha, India—is a compelling portrayal of Lord Krishna and the ten incarnations (Dashavatara) of Lord Vishnu by master artist Apindra Swain.
The rectangular composition is skillfully organised into three distinct sections, each filled with vibrant mythological imagery. The upper and lower registers illustrate the Dashavatara, the ten diverse forms Lord Vishnu takes to restore cosmic order. These incarnations are systematically depicted, reading from top left: Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, Vamana, Parashurama, Lord Rama, Balarama, Buddha, and Kalki.
The central portion of the painting shifts focus, featuring a dynamic arrangement of concentric circles. These circles are richly adorned with celestial beings, intricate floral patterns, and motifs that create a harmonious visual effect. At the very heart of the central circle, Lord Krishna—the most celebrated avatar and the focus of the piece—is shown seated on a tree beside the Yamuna River, playing his iconic flute. This symbolic scene, representing divine love and cosmic music, is surrounded by Gopis (cowherd girls) reaching out, beautifully capturing the essence of Bhakti (devotional worship) in the Hindu tradition.
Swain’s technique employs a striking visual contrast, utilizing a primary monochrome base and selectively highlighting key figures and elements with vibrant colors like yellow, green, and red. This approach emphasises the intricate details of the composition. Through this powerful blend of artistic talent and rich Hindu mythological narrative, this Pattachitra painting is a captivating masterpiece well-suited for any space.

This artwork will be Made to Order and will take 2-3 weeks to be made and shipped.
