About the Artwork +

This expansive Pattachitra painting by artist Purusottam Swain depicts the Krishna Leela, illustrating various divine episodes from the life of Lord Krishna through a complex, multi-layered narrative structure. The artwork is organized into a large central panel divided into three distinct sections, surrounded by a border of circular medallions, each capturing a specific scene from Krishna's journey. The color palette is dominated by earthy tones of moss green, terracotta red, and deep indigo, typical of the traditional Odisha school of art.

The central narrative panels focus on Radha and Krishna, surrounded by gopis celebrating their divine love. Krishna is depicted wearing his classic dhoti and a peacock feather, with heavy ornamentation, while radha is elegantly adorned in majestic robes and ornaments. Entwined in an intimate embrace with Radha, Krishna plays his flute, enchanting everyone surrounding him. Throughout these panels, the background is densely filled with stylized trees and floral patterns, while a blue river filled with lotuses runs along the bottom, grounding the celestial scenes in the landscape of Vrindavan.

The outer border serves as a visual encyclopedia of the Krishna Leela. The medallions depict famous stories, right from Vishnu in Vaikuntha, resting on Ananta shesha, to Devaki and Vasudev's wedding, Kamsa driving their chariot when the divine akashavani predicted that Kamsa would be killed by Devaki's eighth child, followed by Krishna's birth in Mathura's prison, Vasudev carrying him to Gokul, wading through the floods of the Yamuna river amidst heavy downpour, where Sheshnaag forms a protective umbrella over Krishna and Vasudeva quitely places him beside a sleeping Yashoda, making him the beloved of Gokul. Krishna's childhood exploits are also shown, including the slaying of demons like Putana (the demoness), Aghasura (the python), Sakatasura (the demon disguised as a cart), Bakasura (the crane) and others. His popular leelas like Kaliya Mardan are also shown, along with the scenes of him leaving Vrindavan and going to Mathura, to finally defeat various warriors sent by kamsa and the mad elephant and kill Kamsa, with the help of his brother Balarama, and install Ugrasena as the rightful king of Mathura. Each circle is rendered with the meticulous line-work and expressive posturing characteristic of Purusottam Swain’s style. The entire composition is framed by several decorative bands of floral and geometric motifs, which provide a sense of monumental scale and order to this rich collection of sacred stories.

Purusottam Swain

Purusottam Swain
Purusottam Swain, a 26-year-old Pattachitra artist from the heritage-rich village of Raghurajpur, has been dedicated to his craft since the age of eight, inspired by his artist father. His work, deeply rooted in the ancient Pattachitra tradition, preserves mythological tales and vibrant designs, earning him recognition from art lovers in India and abroad. Swain has received a certificate of appreciation from Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath and his art has been showcased at events like Bharat Lok Parv, demonstrating his commitment to keeping this traditional art form alive.

Pattachitra

Pattachitra, a timeless folk art from Odisha and Bengal, is characterized by its meticulous linework, vibrant natural colors, and mythological storytelling, often depicting tales from Hindu epics and dedicated to Lord Jagannath. Originating over a thousand years ago, with strong ties to the 12th-century Jagannath temple in Puri, this art form utilizes traditional techniques, including canvases made from treated cotton cloth, natural pigments derived from shells, soot, turmeric, and cinnabar, and fine brushes made from animal hair. Its cultural and religious significance is profound, integral to festivals like Rath Yatra and serving as a vital livelihood for artisan families, with variations including Jagannath, Radha Krishna, and Durga Pattachitra, as well as palm leaf and wall paintings.
