About the Artwork +
This magnificent Pattachitra painting by Gitanjali Das is a sophisticated visual epic, meticulously chronicling the life and divine play (Lila) of Lord Krishna. Utilizing a complex, multi-panel layout characteristic of the Odisha scroll tradition, the artwork functions as a spiritual map, guiding the viewer through the milestones of Krishna's earthly journey and his supreme cosmic identity.
The central focal point of the composition is a stunning example of visual trickery and devotion: the Nari-Kunjara (Composite Elephant). Here, the Gopis have intertwined their bodies to form the shape of a regal elephant, upon which Krishna sits and plays his flute. This motif is a profound symbol of Bhakti (devotion), suggesting that the devotees have completely surrendered their individual forms to become a vehicle for the Divine. Below this central image, additional panels depict the Kaliya Mardana (subduing the serpent Kaliya) and the Rasa Lila (the divine dance), further emphasizing Krishna's role as the protector and the heart of all joy.
Directly above the central arch is a sequence of the Dashavatara—the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu. Each avatar, from Matsya (the fish) to the future savior Kalki, is captured in a dedicated arch, reinforcing Krishna’s identity as the Purna Avatara (complete incarnation) of Vishnu. The surrounding internal panels illustrate beloved episodes such as the lifting of Mount Govardhan, the playful stealing of butter (Makhan Chor), and the Vastraharana, where Krishna hides the clothes of the Gopis to teach a lesson on spiritual nakedness and ego.
The entire narrative is encased within an extraordinary circular-medallion border. Each of the dozens of small circles acts as a miniature stage, detailing Krishna's life chronologically—from his miraculous birth in the dungeon and his father Vasudeva carrying him across the Yamuna, to his childhood in Gokul and his triumphs over various Asuras (demons). The palette is a rich tapestry of earthy ochres, madder reds, and deep blacks, all derived from natural sources. Through Gitanjali Das's incredible precision in rekhankana (linework), this Pattachitra stands as both a decorative masterpiece and a devotional encyclopedia of the Krishna saga.
