About the Artwork +
This is a sacred Pattachitra by artist Gitanjali Das presents the divine darshan of Lord Tirupati (a form of Vishnu) within a richly ornamented temple setting, evoking the experience of beholding the deity in the sanctum.
Pattachitra is a traditional cloth-based scroll painting from Odisha, known for its intricate detailing, mythological and social narratives, and vibrant, natural color palette.
At the center of the composition is Lord Tirupati Balaji, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu and spouse of Goddess Padmavati (Lakshmi). He is a powerful symbol of emancipation, protection, and the ultimate deity of preservation. Visually, he is depicted as a towering figure (Tiru), standing on a pedestal within a highly elaborate temple mandapam (archway). His four hands represent the four directions of space. The lower right hand is in the Varada hasta mudra, a gesture of granting boons and blessings, while the left hand is in the katyalambita pose, turned inward. The upper hands hold the symbols of his cosmic power: the conch shell (symbolizing the origin of creation) and the Sudarshana Chakra (representing the cosmic mind with limitless power). His face bears the distinctive white and red Tilak (mark) of Vishnu. His clothes and ornamentation are incredibly dense, featuring multiple patterned necklaces, long garlands, and an immense, towering crown (Kireetam), all rendered with minute, meticulous line work suggesting jewels and rich textiles.
The color palette is subtle yet powerful, utilizing a deep black background, which beautifully sets off the fine pale gold, cream, and faint pink highlights used for the Lord's skin, garlands, and the elaborate architectural details. The pattern is one of overwhelming intricacy and repetition, filling every inch of the canvas—from the miniature flower motifs in the background to the repeating geometric and floral patterns defining the columns, arch, and the Lord's countless pieces of divine jewelry.
This intensely detailed, devotional artwork is a great addition to any collection, offering a sense of sacred majesty and an aura of divine blessing to your home.
