About the Artwork +

This divine painting of Shrnathji in Pichwai by Naveen Soni depicts the Annakut, a ritual celebratory feast performed on the occasion of Govardhan puja.

Pichwai painting is a devotional textile art tradition from Nathdwara, Rajasthan, created to be hung behind the murti of Shrinathji, a form of Krishna worshipped at the Nathdwara temple. Traditionally rendered in natural pigments, gold, and silver leaf on cloth, Pichwai paintings depict the deity across the seasons and festivals of the Pushtimarg devotional calendar, combining fine detail with a scale meant to fill and frame the sanctum itself.

At the centre of the canvas is Shrinathji in his iconic pose of Govardhana dhari, a gesture symbolising his divine protection and boundless grace. He is dressed in yellow garments (pitambar), covered in elaborate pearl jewellery with gemstones and a flower garland, with an elaborate headdress with peacock feathers fanning out. He holds a kamal chadi and his flute in his right hand.

Beside him are four more idols, two on each side, reducing in size. The taller statues of the four are the chaturbhuj (four-armed) renditions of Shrinathji in grey garments, elaborate pearl jewellery, and a peacock feather crown with a green bhamandal. The smaller statue on the left imitates the same pattern, while the statue on the right is Shrinathji as muralidhara, in pink garments. All four idols are placed in size-appropriate niches with red backgrounds with yellow patterns.

He is flanked by the main priests, holding the aarti thali and peacock feather fan. Below is a mound of rice(annakuta), along with offerings of food dishes, with devotees eager for darshana on both sides.

This is the traditional celebration of Govardhan Puja, which marks Lord Krishna lifting the Mount Govardhan to shield villagers from Indra’s torrential rains. It represents profound spiritual surrender and gratitude.

The main Shrinathji idol is placed in a square arched niche with gold framing and alternating ruby and emerald centres that is a part of a larger garbhagriha with embroidered flower-pot backdrops atop which is a tiled roof with his dhwaja stambh. Two peacocks appear to be sitting on the roof. At his feet are smaller idols displaying different ways he is revered.

Right below this is a panel of cows with cowherds. The cows are adorned with saffron handprints and peacock feathers, highlighting their divine connection to Krishna and his role as Gopala (protector of cattle or cowherd).

Below is the sacred landscape of Vraj, set against the backdrop of the Govardhan mountain, dotted with cows, peacocks, gopis and villagers, acting as devotees offering various delicacies to Krishna. This section also narrates the playful interactions between Krishna, Balarama and Gopis carrying pots of makkhan (butter).

A graceful Kamal Talai (lotus pond) further enhances the harmony of the composition. The starry night sky is filled with two celestial chariots, depicting Radha Krishna with a cow and Indra with his Airavata.

Adding profound depth to this beautiful composition, Naveen Soni frames the canvas on three sides with depictions of the twenty-four swaroops of Shrinathji, also known as Chhavi or Swaroop, each representing a distinct aspect of Krishna’s divine nature and linked to certain festivals and rituals. Together, these twenty-four swaroops commemorate the diverse and countless manifestations of Lord Krishna celebrated through the devotional calendar and Pushtimarg tradition. The last two folios at the bottom are panels depicting the Guru-Shishya-Parampara, in which one guru imparts knowledge to his disciple, affirming that the painting is not just art but a sacred visual document demonstrating that the knowledge of keeping Shrinathji's traditions alive is passed down directly from a master to a student.

The composition is finally unified by an exquisitely rendered floral border of blue and pink florets, their vines and leaves, followed by a terracotta-red border that elevates the splendour and sacred aura of the Pichwai. This handcrafted masterpiece stands as a heartfelt tribute by the gifted artist Naveen Soni, who continues to uphold the rich legacy of Pichwai painting.
