This Pichwai painting by master artist Suresh Kumar Kumawat presents Shrinathji, the seven-year-old manifestation of Lord Krishna, at the centre of an elaborate temple setting. The composition focuses on ceremonial worship, with Shrinathji flanked by priests (mukhiya ji) and devotees engaged in seva, surrounded by ritual offerings, ornate textiles and architectural details that create an intimate yet highly ornate devotional environment.
Pichwai painting is a devotional textile tradition that developed in Nathdwara, Rajasthan, in association with the Pushtimarg worship of Shrinathji, meant to be placed behind the idol in the shrine.
At the centre, Shrinathji is depicted in his characteristic Govardhan-dhari posture, with his left hand raised above his head and his right hand resting near his waist. His complexion is rendered in a deep blue-black shade, while his face is shown frontally with large, elongated eyes, a prominent nose and small, well-defined lips. A vertical tilak marks his forehead. His head is adorned with an elaborate peacock-feather headdress (mor mukut), incorporating floral and ornamental elements, while a prominent peacock feather rises above it. Behind him stands the kamal chhadi (lotus stem), a key iconographic element in Shrinathji imagery.
The deity is richly adorned with layers of jewellery, including multiple necklaces, pearl strands, earrings, bangles and other ornaments. Long floral garlands descend from his shoulders across his body. His garments are particularly elaborate, combining a yellow-golden garment with red and patterned drapery extending outwards on either side. The fan-like arrangement of the lower garment and the flowing side drapes give the central figure a strikingly symmetrical and ceremonial appearance.
Shrinathji stands within a rectangular shrine whose inner background is rendered in a soft beige tone and decorated with repeated white floral motifs. Surrounding this shrine is a richly patterned textile panel in deep green and black, filled with elaborate floral and scrolling motifs in yellow, pink, purple and orange. The ornamental backdrop creates a strong contrast with the lighter central shrine and visually draws attention towards the deity.
Flanking Shrinathji are priests. On the left, a priest worships him with an aarti thali, holding it in his extended hands. He is dressed in a white traditional garment with red borders and is heavily adorned with necklaces, earrings and arm ornaments; a large ceremonial fan appears behind him, reinforcing his role in the service of the deity. On the right, another priest stands in a reverent, praying position with hands folded in namaskar. Beside and below him are smaller figures, including children, who similarly face the deity in gestures of reverence. Their brightly coloured garments in yellow, red and blue add variety to the otherwise restrained palette of the composition.
Several ritual objects and offerings are arranged on low stools before Shrinathji. These include a jal dani (water pot), prasad and paan beeda.
The upper portion of the painting is framed by a large, curved green canopy or textile drapery, decorated with delicate floral motifs. Beneath it are successive bands of ornamental borders in yellow, pink and white, creating the impression of an elaborate temple canopy or architectural covering.
The entire composition is enclosed within a broad red outer border, followed by narrow yellow, white and dark lines that frame the central scene.
