About the Artwork +
This Pichhwai painting by Suresh Kumar Kumawat presents Srinathji, the divine manifestation of Lord Krishna, at the centre of an elaborate temple setting. The composition focuses on the ceremonial worship of the deity, with Srinathji surrounded by attendants and devotees engaged in various acts of seva. The carefully arranged figures, richly patterned textiles and architectural details create an intimate yet highly ornate devotional environment.
Pichhwai painting is a devotional textile tradition that developed in Nathdwara, Rajasthan, in association with the Pushtimarg worship of Shrinathji. Literally meaning “that which hangs behind,” pichhwais were originally large painted cloths hung behind the deity in the temple sanctum to create a sacred backdrop for darshan. These works are characterised by frontal symmetry, elaborate ornamentation, ritual settings, floral motifs and Krishna’s pastoral imagery, and they function as active participants in worship rather than merely as images for aesthetic viewing
At the centre, Srinathji is depicted in his characteristic Govardhan posture, with one hand raised above his head and the other resting near his waist, recalling Krishna’s lifting of Govardhan Hill to protect the people of Vrindavan. His complexion is rendered in a deep blue-black shade, while his face is shown frontally with large, elongated eyes, a prominent nose and small, well-defined lips. A vertical tilak marks his forehead. His head is adorned with an elaborate crown and headdress, incorporating floral and ornamental elements, while a peacock feather rises prominently above it.
The deity is richly adorned with layers of jewellery, including multiple necklaces, pearl strands, earrings, bangles and other ornaments. Long floral garlands descend from his shoulders across his body. His garments are particularly elaborate, combining a yellow-golden lower garment with red and patterned drapery extending outwards on either side. The fan-like arrangement of the lower garment and the flowing side drapes give the central figure a strikingly symmetrical and ceremonial appearance.
Srinathji stands within a rectangular shrine whose inner background is rendered in a soft beige tone and decorated with repeated white floral motifs. Surrounding this shrine is a richly patterned textile panel in deep green and black, filled with elaborate floral and scrolling motifs in yellow, pink, purple and orange. The ornamental backdrop creates a strong contrast with the lighter central shrine and visually draws attention towards the deity.
On the left side, an attendant stands facing Srinathji while holding a large ritual offering or lamp in his extended hands. He is dressed in a white traditional garment with red borders and is heavily adorned with necklaces, earrings and arm ornaments. A large ceremonial fan appears behind him, reinforcing his role in the service of the deity. A smaller attendant stands below him, dressed in a pinkish garment and carrying a ritual object, contributing to the layered arrangement of figures.
On the right side, a group of attendants and devotees are shown facing Srinathji. The principal male figure wears a white garment with a red head covering and blue drapery, and his hands are joined in prayer. Beside and below him are smaller figures, including children or attendants, who similarly face the deity in gestures of reverence. Their brightly coloured garments in yellow, red and blue add variety to the otherwise restrained palette of the composition.
Several ritual objects and offerings are arranged on the platform before Srinathji. Small vessels, trays, lamps and offerings are placed symmetrically around the central shrine. A decorated low ceremonial seat occupies the space beneath the main platform, adding another architectural layer to the composition.
The upper portion of the painting is framed by a large, curved green canopy or textile drapery, decorated with delicate floral motifs. Beneath it are successive bands of ornamental borders in yellow, pink and white, creating the impression of an elaborate temple canopy or architectural covering.
The entire composition is enclosed within a broad red outer border, followed by narrow yellow, white and dark lines that frame the central scene. The combination of the red outer frame, green patterned backdrop, yellow ornamentation and deep blue-black tones gives the painting a rich and ceremonial visual character. The strong symmetry, repeated floral decoration, elaborate jewellery and carefully positioned attendants reinforce the devotional atmosphere and the visual grandeur associated with Pichhwai painting.
