About the Artwork +
This Pichhwai painting by Suresh Kumar Kumawat presents Srinathji, the divine manifestation of Lord Krishna, in a frontal and highly symmetrical composition. He stands at the centre of the canvas in his characteristic Govardhan posture, with one arm raised above his head, recalling the episode in which Krishna lifted Mount Govardhan to protect the people of Braj from torrential rains.
Pichhwai painting is a devotional textile tradition that developed in Nathdwara, Rajasthan, in association with the Pushtimarg worship of Shrinathji. Literally meaning “that which hangs behind,” pichhwais were originally large painted cloths hung behind the deity in the temple sanctum to create a sacred backdrop for darshan. These works are characterised by frontal symmetry, elaborate ornamentation, ritual settings, floral motifs and Krishna’s pastoral imagery, and they function as active participants in worship rather than merely as images for aesthetic viewing.
Srinathji is rendered in a deep blue complexion, with large almond-shaped eyes, a prominent white tilak and a serene expression. His head is adorned with an elaborate jewelled crown, topped with a peacock feather, while his ears, neck, arms and feet are richly ornamented with intricate jewellery. Multiple pearl and gemstone necklaces cover his torso, while a long garland of pink-and-white lotuses falls almost to his feet. His richly patterned garments fan out on either side of his body in layers of red, yellow and grey, creating a striking sense of symmetry.
The Govardhan gesture is the painting’s key iconographic marker: Srinathji’s left arm is raised above his head in the act of lifting Mount Govardhan, while his right hand rests at or near the waist, producing the poised, frontal stance that identifies him as the child Krishna who sheltered the people and cattle of Braj from Indra’s storm.
Behind the deity is a stylised green backdrop, framed by large banana leaves, a motif closely associated with the lush natural landscape of Braj. A blooming lotus rises beside Srinathji, while a large circular ornamental element resembling a peacock-feather fan or halo appears behind his head. Decorative hanging elements and tassels further enrich the sacred setting.
The composition is enclosed within a broad red outer border, edged with fine yellow and black lines. Within it, the central image is framed by another narrow architectural border, giving the deity the appearance of being enshrined within a sanctum. The restrained background allows the richly ornamented figure of Srinathji to remain the unmistakable visual focus.
Through its frontal symmetry, elaborate adornment, floral motifs and rich textile patterns, the painting transforms the image of Srinathji into a vision of divine splendour and devotional presence, characteristic of the Pichhwai tradition associated with the worship of Krishna in the Pushtimarg tradition.
