About the Artwork +
Step into a realm of divine serenity as master artist Naveen Soni guides you through a spiritual journey in the traditional art of Pichwai, illuminating the canvas with the sacred Leelas of Lord Krishna. Originating from the holy town of Nathdwara in Rajasthan—where Krishna is worshipped as Shrinathji, his seven-year-old form—Pichwai paintings traditionally serve as ornate backdrops hung behind temple deities. Soni’s work honours this legacy with remarkable devotion and finesse.
The canvas, thoughtfully divided into two sections, unfolds a rich tapestry of divine narratives. The upper half is devoted to Shrinathji in his iconic pose, lifting Mount Govardhan—a gesture symbolising his divine protection and boundless grace. He stands beneath a regal golden pavilion, surrounded by offerings such as paan beda, jaldaani (water pot), and a prasad dibbi. Three exquisitely dressed gopis flank him, balancing pots brimming with makhan as offerings to the Almighty. Banana palms, vibrant birds, and celestial deities—including Lord Brahma, Lord Shiva with Goddess Parvati, Lord Indra, and their divine vahanas—encircle the scene, all gathered to witness the sacred darshan of Shrinathji. Lord Surya peers through drifting clouds, enriching the composition with a sense of cosmic presence.
The lower half captures the joyful spirit of Gopashtami, the festival marking Krishna’s elevation from tending calves to herding mature cows—an event symbolising his growing responsibility and deepening bond with his community. Shrinathji is depicted receiving bhog prasad and offerings, surrounded by devoted admirers. This section also narrates the enchanting Daan Leela, where Krishna playfully halts the gopis in a narrow passage to demand a symbolic toll, reminding devotees of the surrender of ego and worldly attachments before the divine. The scene is enriched with Balrama, saffron-adorned cows, peacocks, and the serene flow of the Yamuna, all set against a lush natural backdrop. A row of cows and a graceful Kamal Talai (lotus pond) further enhance the harmony of the composition.
Adding profound depth to this visual tapestry, Soni frames the canvas on three sides with depictions of the twenty-four swaroops of Shrinathji—also known as Chhavi or Swaroop—each representing a distinct aspect of Krishna’s divine nature. Beginning from the second last lower left folio, these festival-linked forms include: Phool Dol, Ram Navami, Narsinh Chaturdarshi, Akshay Tritya, Mahaprabhuji Utsav, Kesari Snaan/Snaan Yatra, Rath Yatra, Thakurani Teej, Pavitra Ekadashi, Raksha Bandhan, Panchamrat Snaan, Janamashtami, Radha Ashtami, Daan Ekadashi, Vaman Dvadashi, Dussehra, Sharad Purnima, Annakut, Gopashtami, Pramod Niji, Gosaiji Utsav, Vasant Panchami, Path Utsav, and Kunj Ekadashi. Together, these twenty-four swaroops commemorate the diverse and countless manifestations of Lord Krishna celebrated through the devotional calendar and Pushtimarg tradition.
The composition is finally unified by exquisitely rendered floral borders that elevate the splendour and sacred aura of the Pichwai. This handcrafted masterpiece stands as a heartfelt tribute by the gifted artist Naveen Soni, who continues to uphold the rich legacy of Pichwai painting—harmoniously blending nature, devotion, and artistry on a single divine canvas.
