This Pichwai painting by Suresh Kumar Kumawat presents Shrinathji, the seven-year-old manifestation of Lord Krishna, as the central focus of a richly ornamented devotional composition. Originating from the Nathdwara tradition of Rajasthan, Pichwai paintings traditionally function as sacred backdrops for the worship of Shrinathji, creating a visual environment for darshan and seva through elaborate ornamentation, ritual imagery and representations of Krishna’s pastoral world.
At the centre, Shrinathji is depicted in a deep blue complexion and his characteristic Govardhan-lifting posture, with his left arm raised and his right hand resting near his waist. He is shown frontally, emphasising his role as the principal sacred presence of the composition. He wears a richly decorated red angarakha with elaborate golden borders and a silver mor-mukut (peacock-feather headdress). A kamal chhadi (lotus wand) is held in his right hand, while a lotus garland and another yellow garland descend across his body. Multiple necklaces, amulets, bracelets and anklets further adorn the deity, emphasising the practice of shringara, or ritual adornment.
On either side of Shrinathji stand two priests engaged in seva. The priest on the left is shown in profile holding an aarti thali towards the deity, while the priest on the right holds a large peacock-feather fan. Their contrasting gestures represent different forms of ritual service offered to Shrinathji. Both are rendered in profile, directing their attention towards the centrally positioned deity.
Behind Shrinathji, golden-coloured cows are arranged against a dark patterned ground, with saffron handprints on their body, highlighting Krishna’s identity as Gopala, the protector and caretaker of cattle. Additional cows appear in a horizontal register below the main shrine, set against a bright yellow ground. Their repeated forms create a rhythmic band across the lower section and reinforce the pastoral associations of Shrinathji.
Ritual offerings are arranged at the feet of the deity, including prasad and a jaldani (water vessel). A low ceremonial seat is also positioned beneath the shrine. These objects bring the material practices of temple worship into the painted composition and reinforce the sense of an active devotional setting.
Above the central shrine is a representation of the temple architecture, with a prominent roof and a dhwaja (ceremonial flag) rising from its centre.
The lowest register depicts the Yamuna river through a dark blue water band populated with lotus plants and blooming flowers. Together with the repeated cows, the Yamuna evokes the sacred landscape of Braj associated with Krishna’s pastoral life.
The painting is enclosed in a border with 24 panels showing different festive forms or swaroops of Shrinathji. A vibrant red outer ground, layered with yellow, green, white and dark borders, frames the entire composition.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.

Returns and Replacements
